  1. 6. IgE sensitization against food allergens : Natural history, relation to airway inflammation and asthma

    Författare :Antonios Patelis; Andrei Malinovschi; Eva Rönmark; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; allergen components; extract-based; exhaled NO; airway hyperresponsiveness; blood eosinophil count; IgE sensitization; food hypersensitivity; food allergens; perennial allergens; natural history; markers of systemic inflammation; markers of local inflammation; Lungmedicin; Lung Medicine; Fysiologi; Physiology; Immunologi; Immunology;

    Sammanfattning : Background: According to recent studies in children, IgE sensitization not only against perennial allergens, but also against food allergens, is related to asthma risk and increased airway inflammation. During the last decade, a new technique for IgE determination based on allergen components has become available, but its use in epidemiological studies has been limited. LÄS MER

  2. 7. Airway responsiveness and exhaled nitric oxide : Studies in asthma and Sjögren's syndrome

    Författare :Dóra Lúðvíksdóttir; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Medical sciences; Airway hyperresponsiveness; nitric oxide; airway inflammation; Sjögren s syndrome; asthma; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Medicine; medicin;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis, four different types of provocation agents: methacholine, adenosine, cold air and mannitol were used to study different aspects of the airway responsiveness profile in asthma and Sjögren's syndrome. Exhaled nitric oxide (NO) and markers of eosinophil activation, serum eosinophil peroxidase (S-EPO) and eosinophil cationic protein (S-ECP) were measured. LÄS MER

  3. 8. The relationship between inflammation and structural changes in the airways of the lower and upper respiratory tract : Studies in patients with asthma, Sjögren's syndrome, rhinitis and children with otitis media with effusion

    Författare :Kawa Amin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cell biology; bronchial hyperresponsiveness; inflammatory cells; asthma; rhinitis; Sjögren s syndrome; children with otitis media with effusion; immunohistochemistry; Cellbiologi; Cell biology; Cellbiologi; medicinsk cellbiologi; Medical Cell Biology;

    Sammanfattning : The pathophysiology of asthma, Sjögrens syndrome (SS), rhinitis, and otitis media with effusion (OME) in children has been extensively investigated in upper and lower respiratory tract, respectively, and shown to comprise structural changes in the airways and involvement of inflammatory cells. By comparing diseases that have bronchial hyperresponsivenses or mucosal inflammation as a common denominator, it may be possible to learn more about the mechanisms underlying inflammation in the upper and lower respiratory tract. 4. 9. Peripheral airway function in asthma and cystic fibrosis. Measurements using inert gas washout methods

    Författare :Henrik Ljungberg; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; acinar; adults; airway hyperresponsiveness; asthma; children; conductive; functional residual capacity; gas trapping; inert gas washout; infants; peripheral airways; plethysmography; respiratory function tests; ventilation inhomogeneity;

    Sammanfattning : It is increasingly recognised that asthma and cystic fibrosis (CF) frequently involves the peripheral airways. Characteristic features of abnormal peripheral airway function are uneven ventilation distribution and increased gas trapping. LÄS MER

  5. 10. Prostaglandin modulation of airway hyperresponsiveness and inflammation in murine models of asthma

    Författare :Linda Swedin; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Allergic asthma is an inflammatory disease of the airways and is characterised by chronic inflammation, reversible bronchoconstriction and airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR). The cyclooxygenases (COXs) are key enzymes in the biosynthesis of prostaglandins, which have diverse physiological and pathological functions, and are also important modulators of inflammatory responses in the lung.
