1. Inhibition of Calcium and Zinc Absorption by Phytate in Man Methodological Studies and Hydrothermal Processing of Cereals to Improve Absorption
Sammanfattning : A mathematical model based on measurements in a whole-body counter described the retention of calcium in the human body. It was shown that the relative retention of intravenous and orally administered 47Ca in all subjects (n = 10 - 11) were well described by fitting a simple function of time with two free parameters to a few whole-body measurements after day 6, when the unabsorbed calcium had been excreted. 2. Hydrothermal Processing of Cereals Optimal Conditions for Phytete Degradation and Myo-Inositol Formation. Effect on Phytase Activity and Mineral Absorption
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to optimise a hydrothermal process to degrade phytate (myo-inositol hexaphosphate), increase the level of free myo-inositol and preserve phytase activity in cereals with the purpose to achieve products with improved mineral bioavailability. Phytate is known to impair mineral absorption and myo-inositol is considered to be a semi-essential nutrient. LÄS MER
3. Processing and Properties of zirconia-CNT composites
Sammanfattning : In the last decades there has been growing interest in developing ceramic materials with high fracture toughness (KIc) and strength for structural applications. In the specific case of 3 mol % yttria-doped tetragonal zirconia (3Y-TZP), K_Ic can be increased by promoting phase transformation from tetragonal (t) to monoclinic (m) phase in front of a propagating crack tip referred to as transformation toughening. 4. Unlocking the Potential of Brewer’s Spent Grain : Sustainable Biorefinery Approach and Value-Added Product Generation
Sammanfattning : Brewer’s spent grain (BSG) constitutes 85% of brewing byproducts and 30% of initial malt. In 2021, BSG production reached approximately 37.2 million tons. Owing to its high moisture and nutritional content, BSG is prone to biological deterioration, causing environmental issues when discarded as waste. LÄS MER
5. Evaluating Swedish seaweeds for biorefinery
Sammanfattning : A sustainable future demands a transition from oil to biomass to produce fuels, chemicals, commodities, and energy. However, to generate the predicted amount of bioenergy required by 2050, all the biomass harvested today should be utilized. One type of biomass that has received relatively little attention is seaweeds. LÄS MER
