1. From hydrothermal carbonization to blue hydrochars and activated carbons : Adsorption of volatile organic compounds and heavy metals
Sammanfattning : Hydrothermal carbonization of carbohydrate and biomass is a straightforward method for preparing hydrochars at low temperature. Hydrochars are more carbonized than their precursors. Hydrochars themselves are carbon precursors for preparing activated carbons. Activated carbons are porous materials that can be used for water and air purification. LÄS MER
2. Assemblies of Colloidal Hydrochar Nanoparticles and their Derived Activated Carbons for CO2 Sorption
Sammanfattning : Carbon-rich colloids are of great fundamental and technological interest and in this thesis, I tested a range of hypotheses and studied aspects of small hydrochar-based colloids and their colloidal and material chemistry. Crude hydrochar dispersions were synthesized by hydrothermal carbonization of glucose and purified by dialysis. LÄS MER
3. Towards a Sustainable Biomass and Waste Refinery Based on Pyrolysis Combined with a Pretreatment Process
Sammanfattning : Some of the naturally accumulated biomass and the massive production of waste by human activities have caused serious environmental problems. The degradation of biomass and waste is one of the main greenhouse gasses (GHG) emission sources. LÄS MER
4. Hydrothermal recycling of natural and synthetic polymers to functional carbon materials
Sammanfattning : Utilizing renewable recourses and waste recycling are necessary for reaching a circular resource society. The concept of this thesis was to set up a sustainable recycling route, suitable even for low quality biopolymer and plastic waste for production of functional carbon materials. LÄS MER
5. Integrated sewage sludge treatment scenarios – techno-economic analysis on energy and phosphorus recovery
Sammanfattning : Sewage sludge is a by-product of wastewater treatment that simultaneously gathers contaminants, valuable organic matter, and nutrients. The treatment of the increasing amount of sewage sludge is important from both pollution prevention and resource recovery perspectives as i) large shares of mineral phosphorus, listed as a critical raw material, terminate in the sewage sludge, and ii) energy recovery from sewage sludge can cover the energy-intensive demand of the treatment process.
