  1. 16. Molecular Interaction in Aqueous Solutions : Effects of Temperature and Solutes on Surface Structure and Hydrogen Bonding in Water

    Författare :Clara-Magdalena Saak; Carl Caleman; Olle Björneholm; Nicusor Timneanu; Edwin Kukk; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : Intermolecular forces in liquids can give rise to complex emergent structures, particularly in water, where hydrogen bonding causes the formation of extended networks, and surfaces, where intermolecular structures can be distinctly different from the bulk, leading to unique properties and behaviours. While such structures have been studied in detail, it is still relatively unknown how such structures respond and adapt to external changes to their environment. LÄS MER

  2. 17. Cellulose-water interaction: a spectroscopic study

    Författare :Erik L Lindh; István Furó; Lennart Salmén; Lisbeth G Thygesen; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; cellulose; water; hydrogen exchange; deuterium; NMR spectroscopy; FT-IR spectroscopy; Kemi; Chemistry;

    Sammanfattning : The human society of today has a significantly negative impact on the environment and needs to change its way of living towards a more sustainable path if to continue to live on a healthy planet. One path is believed to be an increased usage of naturally degradable and renewable raw materials and, therefore, attention has been focused on the highly abundant biopolymer cellulose. LÄS MER

  3. 18. Interaction Between Antimicrobial Peptides and Phospholipid Membranes : Effects of Peptide Length and Composition

    Författare :Lovisa Ringstad; Martin Malmsten; Per Hansson; Jeremy Ramsden; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Adsorption; antibacterial; antimicrobial peptide; bilayer; ellipsometry; electrochemistry; electrostatic interactions; hydrophobicity; liposome; membrane; monolayer; phospholipid; secondary structure; supported bilayer.; PHARMACY; FARMACI; Pharmaceutical Physical Chemistry; farmaceutisk fysikalisk kemi;

    Sammanfattning : Due to increasing problems with bacterial resistance development, there is a growing need for identifying new types of antibiotics. Antimicrobial peptides constitute an interesting group of substances for this purpose, since they are believed to act mainly by disrupting the bacterial membrane, which is a fast and non-specific mechanism. 4. 19. A radical view of haemoglobin - protein engineering and characterisation

    Författare :Marie Grey; Tillämpad biokemi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; His-Gln tagging; protein purification; blood substitutes; radical scavenging; superoxide dismutase; E. coli; diglobin; Haemoglobin; protein engineering; aqueous two-phase systems; hydrophobic interaction chromatography;

    Sammanfattning : In recent years shortages of donated blood have become a growing problem for health care systems world-wide. Blood substitutes based on human haemoglobin (Hb) could potentially ameliorate this situation. However, clinical trials have indicated problems due to e.g. LÄS MER

  5. 20. Effects of fusion tags on protein partitioning In aqueous two-phase systems and use in primary protein recovery

    Författare :Cynthia Hassinen; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :E. coli; Aqueous two-phase systems; Fusion proteins; Hydrophobic interaction chromatography; Expanded bed adsorption; Beta-galactosidase; Klenow polymerase; Z-domain; Peptide tags;

    Sammanfattning : The two techniques aqueoustwo-phase partitioning and expanded bed adsorption that bothare suitable for primary protein recovery were studied. Most ofthe work was focused on partition in aqueous two-phase systemsand in particular on the possibility to effect the partitionbehaviour by fusion of short peptide tags or protein domains tothe target protein.
