  1. 16. Caring, Sharing, and Childbearing : Essays on Labor Supply, Infant Health, and Family Policies

    Författare :Anna Norén; Erik Grönqvist; Matz Dahlberg; Katarina Steen Carlsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Informal care; Elderly; Labor supply; Alcohol prevention; Brief intervention; AUDIT; Antenatal care; Child health; Childcare; Parental leave; Gender equality; Economics; Nationalekonomi;

    Sammanfattning : Essay I: I study the consequences on labor market outcomes and sick leave of having an elderly parent in need of care. Caring for an elderly parent may be associated with opportunity costs such as productivity loss on the labor market if informal caregivers are of working age. LÄS MER

  2. 17. Colonization, persistence and virulence factors in Escherichia coli strains in the human intestinal microflora

    Författare :Forough Nowrouzian; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Escherichia coli; large intestine; infant; newborn; bacterial adhesins; hemolysins;

    Sammanfattning : Escherichia coli is a member of the normal intestinal microflora of man and many animals. In this thesis, various aspects of the E. coli colonization pattern were studied, especially the role of so called virulence factors for persistence of E. coli in the gut microflora. LÄS MER

  3. 18. The impact of early nutrition on extremely preterm infants

    Författare :Elisabeth Stoltz Sjöström; Magnus Domellöf; Inger Öhlund; Deborah O'Connor; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Energy intake; enteral intake; extremely preterm infants; folate; growth failure; human milk; iron; macronutrients; malnutrition; micronutrients; nutrient intake; patent ductus arteriosus; protein; retinopathy of prematurity; surgery;

    Sammanfattning : Background Modern neonatal care has improved the survival rate of extremely preterm infants. These infants are at high risk of malnutrition and growth failure during 3-4 months of hospital care. LÄS MER

  4. 19. Urea and Non-Protein Nitrogen Metabolism in Infants : With Special Reference to the Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)

    Författare :Mary George; Sten Lindahl; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Surgery; Urea; non-protein nitrogen metabolism; SIDS; drinking water nitrate concentration; carbon dioxide production; Kirurgi; Surgery; Kirurgi; anestesiologi; Anaesthesiology;

    Sammanfattning : A large amount of non-protein nitrogen, in the form of urea and ammonium, is present in human breastmilk; however its physiological role in the infant is as yet not fully understood. It has been hypothesized that an insufficient enteric metabolism of urea could play a role in the sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). LÄS MER

  5. 20. Effects of feeding term infants low energy low protein formula supplemented with bovine milk fat globule membranes

    Författare :Niklas Timby; Magnus Domellöf; Olle Hernell; Bo Lönnerdal; Ekhard Ziegler; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; infant formula; milk fat globule membranes; energy; protein; growth; cognition; parental control; infection; cholesterol; oral microbiota; Pediatrics; pediatrik;

    Sammanfattning : Background Observational studies have shown that early nutrition influences short- and long-term health of infants. Formula-fed infants have higher protein and energy intakes and lower intakes of several biologically active components present in human milk. Some of these are present in the milk fat globule membrane (MFGM). LÄS MER
