1. Biomarkers for Better Understanding of the Pathophysiology and Treatment of Chronic Pain : Investigations of Human Biofluids
Sammanfattning : Chronic pain affects 20 % of the global population, causes suffering, is difficult to treat, and constitutes a large economic burden for society. So far, the characterization of molecular mechanisms of chronic pain-like behaviors in animal models has not translated into effective treatments. LÄS MER
2. Cerebrospinal fluid peptidomics: discovery of endogenous peptides as biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease
Sammanfattning : Neurodegenerative diseases (NDs), the most prominent example of which is Alzheimer’s disease (AD), has turned out to be among the greatest challenges for modern medicine. Common characteristics of NDs involve the aggregation of proteins, progressive loss of neuronal cells in specific regions of the central nervous system (CNS) and as a result – cognitive and/or functional decline. 3. Development of proteomic methods for studying cerebrospinal fluid proteins involved in Alzheimer´s disease
Sammanfattning : Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia in western countries. The main neuropathological findings in the AD brain are senile plaques, neurofibrillary tangles and degeneration of neurons and synapses. LÄS MER
4. The Cerebrospinal Fluid in Severe Pain Conditions : Clinical, Pharmacological and Proteomic Aspects
Sammanfattning : The treatment of both cancer pain and non-cancer chronic pain is still suboptimal. The overall aim of this PhD thesis was to conduct translational pain research at the interface between clinical pain medicine and the field of human proteomics, using the practice of intrathecal analgesia at our institution as a starting point. 5. Molecular genetic studies on cerebrospinal fluid monoamine metabolites in psychotic patients and healthy individuals
Sammanfattning : Dopamine, serotonin and noradrenaline are the major monoamines in the human central nervous system (CNS) and following their basic pathways they are degraded to their major metabolites homovanillic acid (HVA), 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) and 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylglycol (MHPG), respectively. The cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) concentrations of the three monoamine metabolites (MM) are considered to reflect the monoamine turnover rates in the CNS, are under genetic influence and have been associated with schizophrenia.
