16. The impact of homocysteine and B vitamins on Alzheimer’s disease, cognitive performance and structural brain changes
Sammanfattning : The overall aim of this thesis was to investigate the relation of homocysteine (tHcy), vitamin B12, and folate with Alzheimer’s disease (AD), cognitive performance, and structural brain changes in population-based studies of Finnish and Swedish elderly individuals. Study I. LÄS MER
17. Intake of fruit and vegetables in European children and their mothers, folate intake in Swedish children and health indicators : overweight, plasma homocysteine levels and school performance
Sammanfattning : An adequate fruit and vegetable intake provides essential nutrients and nutritive compounds and is considered an important part of a healthy lifestyle. Within the Pro Children project, an instrument for assessment of fruit and vegetable intake was developed, for use in nine European countries. LÄS MER
18. Cardiorespiratory fitness and cardiovascular disease risk factors in children and adolescents
Sammanfattning : Cardiovascular disease (CVD) events occur most frequently during or after the fifth decade of life, however, there is evidence indicating that the precursors of CVD has its origin already in the first or second decade of life. Low levels of physical activity and cardiorespiratory fitness are major modifiable determinants for the development of CVD in adults. LÄS MER
19. Sulfur amino acids and their metabolites in patients with renal failure : relation to nutritional status and cardiovascular disease
Sammanfattning : Patients with chronic renal failure (CRF) have a high prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD), malnutrition and diabetes mellitus (DM) and exhibit several abnormalities in amino acid metabolism. The aims of this thesis were to assess alterations in sulfur amino acids and related sulfur compounds in relation to nutritional status, CVD and DM in CRF patients. LÄS MER
20. Biomarkers of one-carbon metabolism in colorectal cancer risk
Sammanfattning : One-carbon metabolism, a network of enzymatic reactions involving the transfer of methyl groups, depends on B-vitamins as cofactors, folate as a methyl group carrier, and amino acids, betaine, and choline as methyl group donors. One-carbon metabolism influences many processes in cancer initiation and development such as DNA synthesis, genome stability, and histone and epigenetic methylation. LÄS MER
