21. Studies of innate and adaptive lymphocytes in human liver diseases and viral infections
Sammanfattning : The immune system, including innate and adaptive lymphocytes, is involved in determining the outcome of many human diseases. Two lymphocyte subsets, natural killer (NK) cells and T cells, which are present in both peripheral blood and in tissues, will be further discussed in the context of acute and chronic viral infections and inflammatory liver diseases in this thesis. 22. Regulation of B cell motility and adhesion in health and disease
Sammanfattning : Migration and adhesion of lymphocytes are crucial to induce an efficient immune response. These activities rely on cytoskeletal dynamics, mediated by assembly of actin and microtubuli monomers leading to changes in cell shape and signaling. LÄS MER
23. Immune functions of intestinal dendritic cells
Sammanfattning : The intestinal surface is daily challenged with tremendous amount of foreign material derived our diet and from the commensal bacteria that densely populate the mucosal surface. Occasionally the gut mucosa is exposed to pathogens trying to enter our body. LÄS MER
24. Studies of inflammatory responses in hantavirus infection
Sammanfattning : Throughout the world, orthohantaviruses cause severe, acute infections in humans. Orthohantaviruses, commonly referred to as hantaviruses, are zoonotic viruses with a single stranded RNA genome of negative sense. LÄS MER
25. T cells in atherogenesis
Sammanfattning : The work of this thesis aims to answer the following questions: (1) Which role do CD4+ cells play in atherosclerosis? (2) Is the expression of CD4 essential for the athero-protective effect mediated by immunization with oxidized LDL by adjuvant? (3) How does the antigenspecific T cell response to oxidized LDL influence lesion development? (4) Is there a general shift to Th2 responses in severe hypercholesterolemia? and finally (5) Which role does transforming growth factor-B (TGF-B)-signaling in T cells play in atherogenesis? ApoE-/-CD4-/- mice were used to study the effect of CD4 deficiency in atherosclerosis. The development of atherosclerosis was decreased with attenuated inflammation in apoE-/- mice lacking CD4+ cells compared to immunocompetent apoE-/-. LÄS MER
