16. An Epidemiological Study of Exhaustion in the Context of Chronic stress. Concept, Cortisol, Causes and Consequences
Sammanfattning : The interest in exhaustion has increased rapidly during the last few decades in many developed countries. In Sweden, prevalence of exhaustion increased by 50 percent on average between 1989 and 2005, and recent data reveals that exhaustion still remains at this higher level. Scientifically, exhaustion is not clearly defined. LÄS MER
17. Novel risk factors for atrial fibrillation in an urban population
Sammanfattning : Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained cardiac arrhythmia in the general population, and a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Low-grade inflammation, erythrocyte volume variation, and subclinical atherosclerosis have repeatedly been associated with cardiovascular disease, but it remains unclear whether these risk factors are also associated with incident AF. 18. Endothelium-derived Vasoactive Factors and Leukocyte-derived Inflammatory Mediators. Studies in subjects with or at risk for vascular disease
Sammanfattning : This study was undertaken to evaluate relationships between endothelial function (assessed as mediators of endothelium-derived vasoactive factors such as nitric oxide [NO], prostacyclin [PGI2] and endothelin [ET-1] ), and risk factors for atherosclerosis, as well as to study possible relationships between endothelial function and leukocyte activation (indicated by measurements of leukocyte-derived inflammatory mediators) in subjects with or at risk for atherosclerosis. In subjects with asymptomatic atherosclerosis we found inverse relationships between cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) in platelets (mediator of NO activity) and both serum total cholesterol and plasma ET-1 suggesting that NO-mediated vasodilation may be impaired in hypercholesterolemia and that maintenance of vascular tone is achieved by a balance between NO and ET-1. 19. Development of a Method to Measure Plasma Levels of Activated Protein C in Complex with Protein C Inhibitor
Sammanfattning : Acute myocardial infarction (MI) and deep venous thrombosis (DVT) are conditions caused by thrombus formation with activation of the coagulation system. The plasma concentration of the complex between activated protein C (APC) and protein C inhibitor (PCI), APC–PCI complex is increased in such states. LÄS MER
20. Ultrasound and atherosclerosis. Evaluation of methods, risk factors and intervention
Sammanfattning : The importance of studying cardiovascular disease before the process leads to hard end-points has been recognised, and methods to quantify early atherosclerosis have been taken in use in many research centres around the world. An ultrasound method with a computer assisted image analysing system was developed in co-operation with the Wallenberg Laboratory for Cardiovascular Research and Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden.
