    Sammanfattning : Matrices whose rows (or columns) consists of monomials of sequential powers are called Vandermonde matrices and can be used to describe several useful concepts and have properties that can be helpful for solving many kinds of problems. In this thesis we will discuss this matrix and some of its properties as well as a generalization of it and how it can be applied to curve fitting discharge current for the purpose of ensuring electromagnetic compatibility. Sammanfattning : This thesis is a compilation of four papers in which mathematical reasoning is examined in various contexts, in which mathematics is an integral part. It is known from previous studies that a focus on rote learning and procedural mathematical reasoning hamper students’ learning of mathematics. LÄS MER

  3. 8. Problems in the Classification Theory of Non-Associative Simple Algebras

    Författare :Erik Darpö; Ernst Dieterich; Karl-Heinz Fieseler; William Crawley-Boevey; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Division algebra; flexible algebra; normal form; composition algebra; absolute valued algebra; vector product; rotation.; MATHEMATICS; MATEMATIK;

    Sammanfattning : In spite of its 150 years history, the problem of classifying all finite-dimensional division algebras over a field k is still unsolved whenever k is not algebraically closed. The present thesis concerns some different aspects of this problem, and the related problems of classifying all composition and absolute valued algebras. LÄS MER

  5. 10. What Will We Learn? : A Mathematical Treatise of Cultural Evolution

    Författare :Pontus Strimling; Kimmo Eriksson; Robert Boyd; Mälardalens högskola; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Cultural Evolution; Mathematical modeling; Applied mathematics; Tillämpad matematik; Matematik tillämpad matematik;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis we apply mathematics and formal modeling to study culture from an evolutionary standpoint. Cultural evolution theory is based on the belief that we can increase our understanding of human behavior by studying how culture is created and spread. LÄS MER
