21. A Glial Role in the Action of Electroconvulsive Therapy
Sammanfattning : The aim of the current thesis was to investigate glial responses to electroconvulsive seizures (ECS), an animal model of the fast-acting antidepressant treatment electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). Depression, a common and devastating disorder, has in recent years been associated with volumetric changes in prefrontal cortex, hippocampus and amygdala, brain regions known to be implicated in emotional behavior. 22. Regimented language training : Changes to brain and behaviour following intensive non-native language learning
Sammanfattning : The influence of foreign-language acquisition on adult brain structure remains mostly unexplored. Whilst several cross-sectional studies have led to further understanding of how language can affect brain structure, only a few longitudinal studies have been conducted. LÄS MER
23. Behavior and cytogenesis following irradiation or isoflurane exposure to the developing brain
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, the effects of an anesthetic agent, isoflurane, on the young brain and resulting behavioral effects were investigated. Anesthesia is commonly used in young children during surgery or other procedures associated with pain or discomfort. LÄS MER
24. Differential effects of voluntary running on hippocampal plasticity in the adult rat brain
Sammanfattning : The continuation of neuronal birth from dividing neural stem cells in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus throughout adulthood is known to play an important role in maintaining normal hippocampal function, such as memory and learning. Negative alterations in the levels of adult neurogenesis have also been linked to several neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer s disease and mood disorders such as depression. LÄS MER
25. MRI Studies of the Fetal Brain and Cranium
Sammanfattning : Ultrasound is the primary modality for fetal imaging, but Magnetic Resonance Imaging nowadays has a valuable complementary role as it often reveals findings that alter pregnancy management. Knowledge on some clinically relevant areas of the normal fetal development is still lacking, and this was the aim of this project. LÄS MER
