16. Gene therapy in epilepsy: neuropeptides and neurotrophic factors
Sammanfattning : Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is the most common form of epilepsy among adult patients, and the most problematic one as seizures cannot be controlled by currently available drugs in 30 % of patients. Gene therapy based on overexpression of endogenous anti-epileptic agents such as the neuropeptide galanin and the glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) represents a promising new approach for treatment of TLE. 17. Neurogenesis in the adult brain from ballyhoo to sobriety
Sammanfattning : New neurons are spontaneously generated in two regions of the adult brain, the hippocampus and the subventricular zone/olfactory bulb. The objective of this thesis was to study potential implications for adult neurogenesis in Alzheimer's (AD) and Parkinson's diseases (PD). LÄS MER
18. The effect of astrocytes and reactive gliosis on neurogenesis and astrogenesis in mice
Sammanfattning : Astrocytes are the most common cell type in mammalian central nervous system (CNS). Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and vimentin constitute intermediate filaments (known also as nanofilaments), a part of the cytoskeleton, in astrocytes. LÄS MER
19. Cerebral arterial pulsatility imaging using 4D flow MRI : methodological development and applications in brain aging
Sammanfattning : 4D flow magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is increasingly recognizedas a versatile tool to assess arterial and venous hemodynamics. Cerebral arterial pulsatility is typically assessed by analyzing flow waveforms over the cardiac cycle, where flow amplitude is a function of cardiac output, central arterial stiffness, and cerebrovascular resistance and compliance. 20. Radiological Studies on Hippocampal Development : Morphological Variants and their Relationship to Epilepsy
Sammanfattning : During fetal development, the hippocampal structures are folded forming the hippocampal sulcus which penetrates into the temporal lobe and then the entity rotates. During this process, the hippocampal sulcus will be closed and the inverted hippocampus takes a rounded form. LÄS MER
