11. Investigation of hepatocyte signaling pathways in chronic kidney disease : clinical and experimental studies
Sammanfattning : Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is defined as a loss of renal function from any cause and lasting for more than three months. The CKD phenotype is similar across multiple etiologies, suggesting that renal damage itself is a dominant factor. LÄS MER
12. Biological Functions of Iduronic Acid in Chondroitin/Dermatan Sulfate in Tumor and Brain Development
Sammanfattning : Cell behavior such as migration and proliferation, especially during cancer development, are balanced by the surrounding environment. Complex polysaccharides called glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) are part of this environment and they are known to modulate tumor development. LÄS MER
13. Hormonal regulation of liver and tumor growth
Sammanfattning : The aims of this thesis were to investigate the regulatory functions of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-a (TNF-a) on liver growth, and the importance of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) and the HGF receptor (Met) for growth of mesenchyme-derived tumors. The studies on different types of liver growth, measured as weight, DNA and protein content, and DNA synthesis, were performed on mice lacking the IL-6 or the TNF receptor-1 gene back-crossed to the C57bl/6 strain. 14. Search for MODY and Type 2 diabetes genes
Sammanfattning : Diabetes is a heterogeneous disease influenced by both environmental and genetic factors. Maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY) is considered as a subform of Type 2 diabetes, which is inherited in an autosomal dominant fashion and expressed at childhood or early adult life. LÄS MER
15. New Roles of Filamins in Cell Signaling, Transcription and Organ Development
Sammanfattning : Filamins are large actin-binding proteins that stabilize delicate three-dimensional actin networks and link them to cellular membranes. They integrate cell architectural and signaling functions and are essential for cell locomotion and development. LÄS MER
