1. Theoretical aspects of tetrapyrrole biochemistry
Sammanfattning : Modern theoretical simulations are able to provide significant insight into biochemical problems on a scale which continues to expand. With the aid of computer power and the sophisticated programs of researchers in the field, we have addressed a series of problems related to the so-called tetrapyrrole cofactors found in all living organisms. 2. Theoretical Studies of Cytochrome P450
Sammanfattning : The cytochromes P450 are a large enzyme family that is found in all living organisms and takes part in both endogenous and exogenous metabolism. They are primarily mono-oxygenases and perform a wide range of reactions. LÄS MER
3. Heme Protein Biogenesis - Catalase in Enterococcus faecalis
Sammanfattning : Heme proteins form a large and diverse group of proteins which are involved in a variety of biological functions. The heme prosthetic group enables them to carry out redox reactions, transport electrons, bind gaseous molecules, and function as sensors. Despite their importance only little is generally known about heme protein biogenesis. LÄS MER
4. Studies of proteins in heme and iron metabolism
Sammanfattning : One aim of the study was to investigate the regulation of the murine erythroid isoform of aminolevulinate synthase (eALAS) protein involved in heme synthesis. Another aim was to characterize the structure of the rat hemochromatosis gene (HFE) gene and its expression in conjunction with other genes involved in the regulation of iron homeostasis during inflammation and iron overload in the rat liver. 5. A1M: a heme and radical binding protein. A study on structure, function and mechanisms
Sammanfattning : This thesis describes functional and structural studies of the human protein α1-microglobulin (A1M), an evolutionarily well-conserved 26 kDa plasma and tissue protein mainly synthesized in the liver. A1M belongs to the lipocalin protein family. Lipocalins share a very similar structur, an 8-stranded β-barrel forming a hydrophobic pocket. LÄS MER
