  1. 1. Heart failure : biomarker effect and influence on quality of life

    Författare :Patric Karlström; Urban Alehagen; Mikael Dellborg; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Heart failure; Biomarker; B-type natriuretic peptide; Heart failure treatment; B-type Natriuretic Peptide guided heart failure treatment; Responders; Health-related quality of life; Heart failure duration; Outcomes;

    Sammanfattning : Background and aims: Heart failure (HF) is a life threatening condition and optimal handling is necessary to reduce risk of therapy failure. The aims of this thesis were: (Paper I) to examine whether BNP (B-type natriuretic peptide)-guided HF treatment improves morbidity and mortality when compared with HF therapy implemented by a treating physician at sites experienced in managing patients with HF according to guidelines; (Paper II) to investigate how to define a responder regarding optimal cut-off level of BNP to predict death, need for hospitalisation, and worsening HF and to determine the optimal time to apply the chosen cut-off value; (Paper III) to evaluate how Health-Related Quality of Life (HR-QoL) is influenced by natriuretic peptide guiding and to study how HR-QoL is affected in responders compared to non-responders; (Paper IV) to evaluate the impact of patient age on clinical outcomes, and to evaluate the impact of duration of the HF disease on outcomes and the impact of age and HF duration on BNP concentration. 2. 2. Heart Regeneration : Lessons from the Red Spotted Newt

    Författare :Nevin Witman; Jamie Morrison; Thomas Braun; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; Heart; Regeneration; Newt; microRNAs; RNA editing; Molecular Biology; molekylärbiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Unlike mammals, adult salamanders possess an intrinsic ability to regenerate complex organs and tissue types, making them an exciting and useful model to study tissue regeneration. The aims of this thesis are two fold, (1) to develop and characterize a reproducible cardiac regeneration model system in the newt, and (2) to decipher the cellular and molecular underpinnings involved in regeneration. 3. 3. Heart preservation

    Författare :Guangqi Qin; Thoraxkirurgi; []

    Sammanfattning : In clinical transplantation today, the donor heart is preserved with cold ischemic storage that gives safe preservation for 4 hours. Non-ischemic perfusion preservation is able to preserve the donor heart for 24 hours in pre-clinical studies. The aim of this thesis is to investigate: 1. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Cold Heart, Warm Heart : On fiction, interaction, and emotion in medical education

    Författare :Anja Rydén Gramner; Katarina Eriksson Barajas; Sally Wiggins Young; Jessica Nina Lester; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SOCIAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Discursive psychology; Medical education; Interaction; Medical humanities; Narrative medicine; Higher education; Professional identity; Professional emotion; Emotional labour; Affective stance; Fiction talk; Reflection; Diskursiv psykologi; Läkarutbildning; Interaktion; Medicinsk humaniora; Narrativ medicin; Högre utbildning; Professionell identitet; Professionella känslor; Emotionellt arbete; Affektiv positionering; Fiktionssamtal; Reflektion;

    Sammanfattning : Fiction is used for educational purposes in various fields such as engineering, law and higher education. In medical education, the theories of medical humanities and narrative medicine propose that engaging with fictional works can provide opportunities for medical students and physicians to develop central professional skills such as emotional awareness and empathy, which can help mitigate the documented empathy decline which occurs during medical training. 5. 5. Heart Valve Surgery : Preoperative Assessment and Clinical Outcome

    Författare :Laila Hellgren; Elisabeth Ståhle; Mårten Rosenquist; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Surgery; Heart valve surgery; magentic resonance imaging; echocardiography; operative mortality; survival; complications; quality of life; Kirurgi; Surgery; Kirurgi;

    Sammanfattning : A more global analysis of the outcome of heart valve surgery is desirable to reflect the actual benefit for the patient. This thesis focuses on the preoperative assessment of the patient, and the outcome after surgery with regard to operative mortality, long-term survival, valve-related complications, and quality of life.
