  1. 1. Genetic and Ecological Consequences of Fish Releases : With Focus on Supportive Breeding of Brown Trout Salmo trutta and Translocation of European Eel Anguilla anguilla

    Författare :Johan Dannewitz; Jacob Höglund; Erik Petersson; Ian Fleming; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; conservation; fishery management; panmixia; genetic variation; effective population size; hatchery selection; Biologi; Biology; Biologi;

    Sammanfattning : Although the practice of releasing fish into the wild is common in the management and conservation of fish populations, the success of release programmes and the potential harmful genetic and ecological effects that may follow are rarely considered. This thesis focuses on genetic and ecological consequences of fish releases, exemplified by supportive breeding of brown trout (Salmo trutta) and translocation of European eel (Anguilla anguilla). 2. 2. Stress Coping Strategies in Brown Trout (Salmo Trutta): Ecological Significance and Effects of Sea-Ranching

    Författare :Daniel Brelin; Svante Winberg; Erik Petersson; Jörgen Johnsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Zoophysiology; Stress-coping-strategies; Animal-personalities; Behavioral-syndromes; Brown trout; Salmo trutta; Catecholamines; Sexual maturation; Hatchery; Phenotype; Learning; Zoofysiologi; Biology; Biologi;

    Sammanfattning : Two distinct stress coping strategies, proactive and reactive, have been stated in various animal studies, each associated with a set of behavioural and physiological characteristics. In a given challenging situation, proactive animals show more aggression, a higher general activity and a predominant sympathetic reaction. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Genetic Aspects of Sexual Selection and Mate Choice in Salmonids

    Författare :Lars Forsberg; Mats Grahn; Jacob Höglund; Claus Wedekind; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; mate choice; Mhc; Major histocompatibility complex; class IIB; disassortative; assortative; microsatellite; outbreeding; supportive breeding; population; population genetics; Biologi; Biology; Biologi;

    Sammanfattning : The long-term genetic consequences of supportive breeding programs are not well understood. Nevertheless, stocking populations with hatchery-produced fish to compensate for losses of natural production are common practice, for example after constructions of hydroelectric power dams. 4. 4. Genetic Variation in Mhc Class II B in Atlantic Salmon: Evolutionary and Ecological Perspectives

    Författare :Åsa Langefors; Biodiversitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; recombination; genetic variation; Mhc class II B; Atlantic salmon; evolution; population genetics; Animal ecology; Djurekologi;

    Sammanfattning : The Major Histocompatibility Complex (Mhc) genes are crucial for the recognition of self and non-self peptides by the immune defence system. They are extremely variable in most studied vertebrate species. I have studied the extent and the importance of Mhc variation in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), mainly from the Baltic Sea. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Fish coping with stress-Physiology and behaviour in salmonids with focus on stress coping styles, rearing conditions and smolt migration

    Författare :Malin Rosengren; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Behaviour; Conservation; Cortisol; Intestinal barrier function; Metabolism; Salmonids; Stress; Stress coping styles;

    Sammanfattning : When animals are reared for conservational releases it is paramount to avoid reducing genetic and phenotypic variation over time. Therefore, an understanding of how behavioural and physiological traits affect the performance of an individual both within the captive and the wild environment is required. LÄS MER
