1. Interacting particle systems for opinion dynamics: the Deffuant model and some generalizations
Sammanfattning : In the field of sociophysics, concepts and techniques taken from statistical physics are used to model and investigate some social and political behavior of a large group of humans: their social network is given by a simple graph and neighboring individuals meet and interact in pairs or small groups. Although most of the established models feature rather simple microscopic interaction rules, the macroscopic long-time behavior of the collective often eludes an analytical treatment due to the complexity, which stems from the interaction of the large system as a whole. 2. Heterogeneous Film-Forming Latexes : Preparation - Morphology - Mechanical Properties
Sammanfattning : This thesis describes the preparation of heterogeneous latexes, which may serve as binders in coating applications, and the characterization of these. The latexes were prepared in two-stage seeded emulsion polymerization. LÄS MER
3. Combinatorial Considerations on Two Models from Statistical Mechanics
Sammanfattning : Interactions between combinatorics and statistical mechanics have provided many fruitful insights in both fields. A compelling example is Kuperberg’s solution to the alternating sign matrix conjecture, and its following generalisations. LÄS MER
4. Investigation of hard-to-filter materials -Relating local filtration properties to particle interaction
Sammanfattning : Filtration as a means of separating solids from liquids is an important unit operation employedin a range of different industrial sectors, e.g. forest products, mineral, chemical process andpharmaceutical industries to name but a few. LÄS MER
5. Soft resummation and hard evolution : Renormalization group methods in effective theories and multi scalar models
Sammanfattning : This thesis is composed out of five papers that deal with various problems intheoretical particle physics. While paper I is a precision calculation in aneffective theory of the Standard Model, paper II to V all deal with beyond theStandard Model physics. Paper IV is a manual for the tools developed during ourwork on paper II to V.Paper I. LÄS MER
