1. Diel vertical migration in marine dinoflagellates
Sammanfattning : Increasing precipitation and surface water temperature due to global change may strengthen stratification in coastal regions, which could influence the behavior of dinoflagellate diel vertical migration (DVM). DVM is a behavioral mechanism by which dinoflagellates can access photosynthetically active radiation near the surface, and nutrients at depth. LÄS MER
2. Freshwater processes and water mass transformation in the Arctic Ocean
Sammanfattning : This thesis explores freshwater-related processes and water mass transformation in the Arctic Ocean. Knowledge of these processes is important from both a local and a global perspective. Globally, because the export of cold and low saline water and sea ice might influence the North Atlantic and global meridional overturning circulation. LÄS MER
3. Magnetic properties of magnetosomal greigite and factors influencing its occurrence and preservation in Baltic Sea Littorina sediments
Sammanfattning : The Baltic Sea is one of the world’s largest brackish water environments and is today suffering from, for example, eutrophication, spreading hypoxia, accumulations of contaminants and invasive organisms. These problems exist due to a combination of natural features that makes the Baltic Sea a sensitive ecosystem (such as long water residence time, limited water exchange, large catchment area), and anthropogenic pressures on land, (such as agriculture and land-use changes, large human populations and industries) and in the sea (such as transport, fishing and bottom-trawling). 4. Uncovering Ocean Mixing near Rough Bathymetry : Using Broadband Acoustics
Sammanfattning : Ocean mixing related to rough bathymetry is highly dynamic and exhibits large spatial and temporal variability. Therefore, established in-situ methods as well as numerical models often lack the resolution to capture this type of mixing. In this thesis, acoustics are used to observe, map and quantify stratified mixing at unprecedented resolution. LÄS MER
5. In the Pipe or End of Pipe? : Transport and Dispersion of Water-borne Pollutants and Feasibility of Abatement Measures
Sammanfattning : Eutrophication is one of the key environmental problems of today, both in terms of complexity and magnitude. For the Baltic Sea (BS), eutrophication is an acute problem, leading to hypoxic conditions at the bottom; a situation that is sustained and amplified, when phosphorus is released from hypoxic sediments.
