16. Maternal smoking and foetal growth b interaction with foetal and maternal characteristics
Sammanfattning : In the thesis are analyzed the combined effects of maternal characteristics and cigarettesmoking in pregnancy on foetal growth; and potential interactions with maternalanthropometry, haemoglobin levels in the three trimesters and maternal glucose metabolismin late pregnancy. Foetal growth was assessed through serial ultrasound measurementsfrom second trimester until term and by neonatal anthropometry. LÄS MER
17. Heparin coating and cardiotomy suction in cardiopulmonary bypass
Sammanfattning : The present thesis addresses various means of reducing inflammatory responses associated with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) and retransfusion of pericardial suction blood (PSB) during cardiac surgery. Four (I-IV) prospective randomised controlled clinical trials comprising 475 patients were performed in the following areas: effects of heparin coating on measures of clinical outcome and memory function (I, II), inflammatory reactions in PSB and its systemic effects after retransfusion using cardiotomy suction or cell salvage (III) and effects of retransfusion of PSB on memory function and release patterns of protein S100B (IV). 18. Molecular and Metabolic Aspects of Plant and Bacterial Salt Tolerance
Sammanfattning : Salt stress is one of the historically as well as potentially largest agriculture problem humans have faced. Researchers have investigated and tried to solve this problem for a long time. Over 20 reviews have been written on this topic the last five years. LÄS MER
19. Host genetic factors and antibody responses with potential involvement in the susceptibility to malaria
Sammanfattning : The relatively lower susceptibility to malaria seen in the Fulani ethnic group in Africa, as compared to other sympatric ethnic groups, has been related to genetic regulation of the immune responses. This thesis aimed to describe important pathways related to the regulation of antibodies in the immune responses during a malaria infection. LÄS MER
20. Safety and Efficacy Modelling in Anti-Diabetic Drug Development
Sammanfattning : A central aim in drug development is to ensure that the new drug is efficacious and safe in the intended patient population. Mathematical models describing the pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic (PK-PD) properties of a drug are valuable to increase the knowledge about drug effects and disease and can be used to inform decisions.
