  1. 6. Aspects of Hadron Production in High-Energy Heavy-Ion Physics

    Författare :David Silvermyr; Partikel- och kärnfysik; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; RHIC; pad readout; electronic; chip-on-board; tracking; heavy-ion collisions; freeze-out temperature; delta resonance; SPS; WA98; PHENIX; Fysik; coherent peripheral; multiplicity; Physics; Fysicumarkivet A:2001:Silvermyr;

    Sammanfattning : High-energy heavy-ion collisions provide a unique tool for the study of nuclear matter as a function of temperature and density. WA98 at the CERN SPS recorded data with a 158 A GeV Pb beam on a Pb target in 1996. To cope with the high charged-particle density, a tracking system based on high granularity multi-step avalanche detectors was developed. LÄS MER

  2. 7. Calibration of the ATLAS calorimeters and discovery potential for massive top quark resonances at the LHC

    Författare :Elin Bergeås Kuutmann; Jörgen Sjölin; Kerstin Jon-And; Sten Hellman; Hans Bøggild; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; particle physics; the ATLAS experiment; the Large Hadron Collider; calorimeter; calorimetry; hadronic calibration; top quark; top quark pair resonances; search for physics beyond the Standard Model; Elementary particle physics; Elementarpartikelfysik; Physics; Fysik; fysik; Physics;

    Sammanfattning : ATLAS is a multi-purpose detector which has recently started to take data at the LHC at CERN. This thesis describes the tests and calibrations of the central calorimeters of ATLAS and outlines a search for heavy top quark pair resonances. LÄS MER

  3. 8. Search for Charginos and Sleptons in ATLAS and Identification of Pile-up with the Tile Calorimeter

    Författare :Pawel Klimek; Christophe Clément; Barbro Åsman; Freya Blekman; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ATLAS experiment; particle physics; high energy physics; supersymmetry; SUSY; beyond standard model; chargino; neutralino; slepton; vector boson fusion; VBF; Tile calorimeter; TileCal; pile-up; quality factor; Large Hadron Collider; LHC; CERN; fysik; Physics;

    Sammanfattning : The standard model of particle physics (SM) describes the elementary particles and their interactions. Supersymmetry (SUSY), a symmetry beyond those included in the standard model could resolve some of the SM shortcomings. It can provide a candidate for Dark Matter and a solution to the hierarchy problem. LÄS MER

  4. 9. Studies of Long-Lived Supersymmetric Top Quarks and Online Monitoring of the ATLAS First Level Calorimeter Trigger

    Författare :Marianne Johansen; Sten Hellman; David Milstead; Peter Christiansen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; particle physics; fundamental questions in physics; supersymmetry; stable massive particles; LHC; the ATLAS experiment; the level-1 calorimeter trigger; CERN; Elementary particle physics; Elementarpartikelfysik; fysik; Physics;

    Sammanfattning : The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has recently started colliding protons  at  7 TeV centre-of mass energy. Extensive searches for hitherto unobserved particles and physics processes will be made as part of an ambitious scientific programme which aims to answer some of the fundamental questions in modern physics. 5. 10. Exploring the Merits and Challenges of Hyperon Physics : with PANDA at FAIR

    Författare :Walter Ikegami Andersson; Karin Schönning; Michael Papenbrock; Tord Johansson; Volker Crede; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Hadron physics; Hyperon; Track reconstruction; Non-perturbative QCD; Spin observables; PANDA; Fysik med inriktning mot kärnfysik; Physics with specialization in Nuclear Physics;

    Sammanfattning : Binary hyperon production in antiproton-proton annihilations will be carried out with the PANDA experiment at FAIR, and probes the strong interaction in the non-perturbative regime where the relevant degrees of freedom are unclear. The self-analyzing decays of hyperons provide a straightforward way to study reaction dynamics via the measurement of spin observables. LÄS MER
