  1. 1. Regional and local variation in plant species richness

    Författare :Cecilia Dupré; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Developmental biology; coastal meadows; deciduous forests; dry grasslands; grazing; habitat configuration; habitat quality; hump-shaped curve; life history traits; regional species pool; soil factors; Utvecklingsbiologi; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi; ekologisk botanik; Ecological Botany;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis, I examine the variation in plant species richness along gradients of productivity and disturbance in grasslands and forest habitats in southern Sweden, and I compare the documented patterns with theoretical predictions. Moreover, I evaluate the relative importance of habitat quality and habitat configuration for the occurrence of field layer species in deciduous forests. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Drivers of carbon sink function in tropical seagrass beds : influence of carbon import, plant composition, seascape configuration and human activities

    Författare :Rashid O. Ismail; Mats Björk; Martin Gullström; Maria E. Asplund; Amelia S. Buriyo; Matern S.P. Mtolera; Teresa Alcoverro; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Carbon sequestration; tropical seagrass meadows; coastal seascape; landscape configuration and transformation; calcification; allochthonous carbon; community respiration; carbon sink; human disturbance; coastal conservation; Plant Physiology; växtfysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Seagrass meadows are effective carbon sinks, sequestering atmospheric CO2 and capturing allochthonous organic material, storing organic carbon (Corg) in their sediments, so called Blue Carbon. In tropical areas, seagrass meadows have a high number of calcareous organisms, which can offset carbon sequestration by releasing CO2 through their calcification. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Ecology of parasitoids and their hosts in oilseed rape fields

    Författare :Josef Berger; Biodiversitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; parasitoids; herbivores; oilseed rape; pollen beetle; cabbage stem weevil; parasitoid community; niche separation; landscape scale; community composition; landscape configuration; Species abundance distribution SAD models; dispersal; metacommunity;

    Sammanfattning : Oilseed rape fields are a very common crop in the agricultural landscape of southern Sweden, and they can harbour surprisingly many insect species. Some of them are herbivores that feed on various parts of the oilseed rape plant, others are natural enemies of the herbivores, and even more species are tourists from the surrounding landscape. 4. 4. Management Practices for Dealing with Uncertainty and Change : Social-Ecological Systems in Tanzania and Madagascar

    Författare :Maria Tengö; Thomas Elmqvist; Monica Hammer; Carl Folke; Kamaljit Bawa; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; resilience; ecosystem services; local ecological knowledge; traditional ecological knowledge; ecosystem management; agroecosystems; dry tropical forest; social institutions; forest regeneration; sacred forests; taboos; community conservation; Southern Madagascar; Androy; Iraqw; management practices; habitat loss; small reserves; human-dominated ecosystems; social-ecological systems; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : The development of human societies rests on functioning ecosystems. This thesis builds on integrated theories of linked social-ecological systems and complex adaptive systems to increase the understanding of how to strengthen the capacity of ecosystems to generate services that sustain human well-being. 5. 5. Food web dynamics in open and closed systems

    Författare :Johan Lövgren; Lennart Persson; Jonathan Chase; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; allochtonous input; cross habitat foraging; donor control; heterogeneity within trophic level; compensation; food web; littoral; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis is a summary of enclosure and microcosm experiments that aimed to study the impact of allochtonous subsidies on food web dynamics in a heterogeneous food web. In the enclosure studies, a three trophic level littoral food web was used. LÄS MER
