  1. 1. Bacteria-host cell interactions : Studies on initial colonization, antimicrobial peptides, and biofilms

    Författare :Gabriela Wassing; Ann-Beth Jonsson; Elena Vikström; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Neisseria meningitidis; Lactobacillus; host responses; EGR1; antimicrobial peptides; hBD2; A20; biofilm; molekylär biovetenskap; Molecular Bioscience;

    Sammanfattning : The obligate human pathogen Neisseria meningitidis asymptomatically colonizes the upper respiratory tract, but crossing of the epithelial barrier can cause life-threatening meningitis and/or sepsis. N. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Cellular and molecular mechanisms in the pathogenesis of irritable bowel syndrome

    Författare :Ghazaleh Mohammadian Kermani; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is part of the functional bowel disorder spectrum with no single accepted theory of its development and no biological marker for diagnosis. Today the diagnosis is defined by the ROME criteria, but this is not always correlated to the diagnosis the clinician gives. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Antimicrobial peptides as defense molecules at the interface of the host and bacteria

    Författare :Ulf Meyer-Hoffert; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Microbes surround us. However, most of the time we are unaware of them. Our epithelial surfaces, which provide the physical barrier and separate us from the environment, are usually free of signs of a battle taking place. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Organic dust-induced signaling in human pulmonary epithelial cells : emphasis on effects of cAMP modulation

    Författare :Karin Burvall; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : To study signaling transductions in innate immunity a model system was applied where A549 alveolar epithelial type II cells were used as target and organic dust collected in swine confinement buildings as stimulus. The dust represents a complex mixture of feed and faecal particles, dander from swine, bacteria (whole bacteria and cell wall components) and fungi. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Human intestinal epithelial cells in innate immunity : interactions with normal microbiota and pathogenic bacteria

    Författare :Gangwei Ou; Sten Hammarström; Marie-Louise Hammarström; Agnes Wold; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Immunology; immunologi; Immunology;

    Sammanfattning : Rod-shaped bacteria were previously shown to be associated with the small intestinal epithelium of children with celiac disease (CD). Using culture-dependent and independent methods, we characterized the microbiota of small intestine in children with CD and controls. The normal microbiota constitutes an unique organ-specific biofilm. LÄS MER
