6. Engineering enzymes towards biotherapeutic applications using ancestral sequence reconstruction
Sammanfattning : Enzymes are versatile biocatalysts that fulfill essential functions in all forms of life and, therefore, play an important role in health and disease. One specific application of enzymes in life science is their use as biopharmaceuticals, which typically benefits from high catalytic activity and stability. LÄS MER
7. Engineering of lignin in wood towards functional materials
Sammanfattning : Through 270 million years of evolution, the finely tuned hierarchical structure of wood has been optimized for efficient nutrient transport and exceptional mechanical stability. Its distinctive orthotropic constitution can provide inspiration and design opportunities for the development of novel functional materials. LÄS MER
8. Physical activity and the young female skeleton
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to identify the influence of calcium, physical activity and detraining on bone mass and bone size in girls and young women. We hypothesised that calcium intake above a specific level does not enhance the accrual of bone mineral, that exercise predominantly influences the skeleton in the early pubertal period and that reduced training is followed by a loss of exercise-induced skeletal benefits. 9. Antimicrobial activity of human seminal plasma and seminal plasma proteins
Sammanfattning : Seminal plasma is semen without the spermatozoa. Human seminal plasma is a complex mixture of secretions from the sex accessory glands, mainly the seminal vesicles and the prostate. Seminal plasma has high protein content and it also contains ions, sugars and low molecular weight components. LÄS MER
10. Activation of murine cytotoxic cells with interelukin-2 and the bacterial superantigen staphylococcal entertoxin A
Sammanfattning : Natural killer (NK) cells and T lymphocytes are the major effector cells that can recognize and kill tumor cells. NK cells have a constitutive cytotoxic activity and kill a wide spectrum of tumor cells while T cells recognize specific tumor antigens and need to be activated through their TCR to differentiate into cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) killers or T helper cells.
