  1. 31. Pollinators, Enemies, Drought, and the Evolution of Reproductive Traits in Primula farinosa

    Författare :Per Toräng; Jon Ågren; Johan Ehrlén; Rebecca Irwin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; Alternative reproductive strategies; climate change; facilitation; floral display; flowering phenology; frequency-dependent selection; genetic diversity; life-history strategies; local adaptation; pollination; predation; Primula farinosa; reproductive effort; soil disturbance; stochastic growth rate; Ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis, I combined comparative and experimental approaches to examine selection on reproductive traits and population differentiation in the insect-pollinated, self-incompatible, perennial herb Primula farinosa. More specifically, I (1) determined whether the effects of floral display and interactions with pollinators and seed predators, and plant reproductive success were frequency-dependent and affected by surrounding vegetation context, (2) examined the consequences of intermittent drought years on population dynamics using numerical simulations based on demographic data collected over seven years, (3) analyzed among-population differentiation in flowering phenology and reproductive allocation, and its relationship to soil-depth at the site of origin. 2. 32. Studies of Glycosaminoglycan Interactions - Surface Immobilization Strategies and Biosensing Applications

    Författare :Noomi Altgärde; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; glycosaminoglycans; interaction studies; growth factor; QCM-D; virus glycoprotein; SPR; surface immobilization;

    Sammanfattning : Many important biological functions of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) have been highlighted in research literature during recent years. GAGs often serve as function-bearing structural elements in the extracellular matrix (ECM), but are also constituents of the cell membrane. GAGs take part in various biological mechanisms, e.g. LÄS MER

  3. 33. Drip Sealing Grouting of Tunnels in Crystalline Rock: Conceptualisation and Technical Strategies

    Författare :Christian Butron; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; icicle formation; drip sealing; unsaturated flow; rock fracture; dripping.; channels; crystalline rock; design; Grouting; ice growth; evaluation;

    Sammanfattning : A conceptual model of the groundwater hydraulic conditions around the tunnel contour in ancient brittle crystalline rocks has been developed and verified. The general aim has been to reach an understanding of the groundwater conditions in and close to the tunnel roof where dripping takes place and to propose technical and practical strategies for waterproofing. 4. 34. Effect of estrogen on longitudinal bone growth

    Författare :Andrei S Chagin; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Growth plate; chondrocytes; estrogen receptors; androgen; tamoxifen.;

    Sammanfattning : Longitudinal bone growth occurs at the growth plate, a thin layer of cartilage between the epiphysis and the metaphysis of long bones. In the growth plate resting chondrocytes proliferate, differentiate into a hypertrophic form, and finally become terminal hypertrophic chondrocytes before giving rise to bone. LÄS MER

  5. 35. Thin metal films on weakly-interacting substrates : Nanoscale growth dynamics, stress generation, and morphology manipulation

    Författare :Andreas Jamnig; Kostas Sarakinos; Gregory Abadias; Gregory Thompson; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Thin films; magnetron sputter-deposition; in situ and real-time characterization; early film growth stages; residual stress; manipulation of morphology; Couches minces; pulvérisation magnétron; caractérisation in situ en temps réel; premiers stades de croissance; contraintes résiduelles; manipulation de morphologie;

    Sammanfattning : Vapor-based growth of thin metal films with controlled morphology on weakly-interacting substrates (WIS), including oxides and van der Waals materials, is essential for the fabrication of multifunctional metal contacts in a wide array of optoelectronic devices. Achieving this entails a great challenge, since weak film/substrate interactions yield a pronounced and uncontrolled 3D morphology. LÄS MER
