1. Pastoralists and the Environmental State : A study of ecological resettlement in Inner Mongolia, China
Sammanfattning : China's quest for sustainable development has given birth to a set of contested ‘ecological construction’ programmes. Focusing on ‘ecological resettlement’, a type of policy measure in a programme for restoring degraded grasslands, this thesis sets out a critical analysis in opposition to the dominant technical and managerial approaches to understanding environmentalisation. 2. More Water, Less Grass? : An assessment of resource degradation and stakeholders’ perceptions of environmental change in Ombuga Grassland, Northern Namibia
Sammanfattning : The objectives of this thesis are to assess: to what degree have natural resources deteriorated in a grazing area in northern Namibia, how do perceptions of environmental change held by local stakeholders there, correspond to scientific assessments, and how do these relate to national estimates? Analysis of the process of developing national indicators for monitoring of land degradation concluded that specific indicators should be developed on national level, and in some instances even on local level as there are no universal causes of land degradation. According to farmers overgrazing and low rainfall since the early 1990s cause negative environmental changes in the study area, partly confirming findings from national monitoring. LÄS MER
3. PV water pumping systems for grassland and farmland conservation
Sammanfattning : Grassland degradation is considered as one of the worst environmental and economic problems in China because of the negative impacts on water and food security. The application of the photovoltaic water pumping (PVWP) technology for irrigation is an innovative and sustainable solution to curb the progress of grassland desertification and to promote the conservation of farmland in remote areas. 4. Biological diversity values in semi-natural grasslands : indicators, landscape context and restoration
Sammanfattning : Semi-natural grasslands, which are a declining and fragmented habitat in Europe, contain a high biodiversity, and are therefore of interest to conservation. This thesis examines how plant diversity is influenced by the landscape context, and how plant and fungal diversity can be targeted by practical conservation using indicator species and congruence between species groups. 5. Functionality of wet grasslands as green infrastructure : waders, avian predators and land covers in Northern Europe
Sammanfattning : Habitat loss is a global issue that affects land cover patterns, ecological processes and the distribution and abundance of species. As a result, many conservation approaches have appeared, such as the European Union’s green infrastructure (GI) policy and UNESCO’s Biosphere Reserve (BR) concept. LÄS MER
