6. Exploring the role of granular activated carbon in drinking water production
Sammanfattning : Safe and clean drinking water is recognised as a human right by the United Nations, but water sources world-wide are affected by the widespread use of synthetic chemicals, creating a challenge that drinking water producers must address. Many of these synthetic chemicals, here referred to as organic micropollutants (OMPs), are not well removed by conventional drinking water treatment, and thus additional treatment steps are needed. 7. Pharmaceutical compounds; a new challenge for wastewater treatment plants
Sammanfattning : Analytical analyses conducted at the Himmerfjärden WWTP (285.000 PE connected) identified 70 pharmaceutical compounds belonging to different therapeutic classes. Such organic micropollutants at low detected concentration range of µg - ng l-1 did not affect the treatment processes at WWTP. LÄS MER
8. Removal of Micropollutants from Wastewater in Aerobic Granular Sludge and Activated Sludge Systems
Sammanfattning : The presence of organic substances in the aquatic environment, such as pharmaceutically active compounds, antibiotics, and personal care products, has become a worldwide issue of increasing environmental concern. As they are present at nano- to microgram per liter concentrations, they are defined as organic micropollutants (OMPs). LÄS MER
9. Adsorption and transformation of organic micropollutants in wastewater : New insights from 14C-labeling
Sammanfattning : This thesis focuses on the removal of organic micropollutants and transformation products using ozone and activated carbon treatment processes. A combination of 14C-labeled and non-radiolabeled organic micropollutants was used to study aspects of micropollutant removal from novel perspectives. LÄS MER
10. Physicochemical Treatment of Municipal Wastewater : From Direct Membrane Filtration to Adsorption of Organic Micropollutants
Sammanfattning : Pharmaceutical residues and other organic micropollutants are transported via municipal wastewater to wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). However, current treatment processes are not designed to remove organic micropollutants, and several such compounds have been found in recipients, where they can have negative effects on aquatic organisms.
