21. Structural and evolutionary studies of a lipocalin: the alpha1-microglobulin protein and its gene
Sammanfattning : a1-microglobulin is a small glycoprotein present in plasma and in tissues surrounding the gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts. a1-microglobulin is a member of the lipocalin protein family and exhibits several of the typical traits of a lipocalin; it binds an unknown ligand which causes the brown color of the protein, it forms complexes with various different proteins and there have been indications of the presence of a receptor for a1-microglobulin on T-lymphocytes. 22. Molecular mechanisms in obesity-associated metabolic disease
Sammanfattning : Obesity is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Subjects with obesity are at risk of developing several serious conditions such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, coronary heart disease and stroke. LÄS MER
23. Novel endogenous mechanisms of complement regulation - A delicate balance
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, the biochemical mechanisms for complement activation by endogenous proteins are explored. The short leucine-rich repeat proteins (SLRPs) help organise extracellular matrices. We found that several SLRPs bind C1q and of these, fibromodulin and osteoadherin trigger complement. LÄS MER
24. Genetic regulation of autoimmune neuroinflammation
Sammanfattning : Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a complex disease characterized by inflammation and demyelination in the central nervous system (CNS), causing neurological deficits. Although there is an increased familial aggregation rate and evidence for a genetic influence on disease susceptibility, environmental factors are also of importance. LÄS MER
25. The complex genetics of experimental autoimmune neuroinflammation
Sammanfattning : Experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) is an animal model for multiple sclerosis (MS), a chronic inflammatory and demyelinating disease of the central nervous system (CNS). MS is the second most common cause of neurological disability among young adults in the western world. LÄS MER
