1. Polyelectrolytes and Polycomplexes in Biotechnology
Sammanfattning : Polyelectrolytes and polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) are characterized by many useful properties that endow them with high potential in different areas of biotechnology. This thesis describes the development and analyses of some new systems and methods utilizing poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), poly(methacrylic acid) (PMA), poly (N-ethyl-4-vinylpyridinium bromide) (PEVP) and PMA-PEVP complexes. 2. A kinetic study of metabolite transfer in coupled two-enzyme reactions
Sammanfattning : There are two fundamentally different ways by which a metabolite can be transferred between enzymes in metabolic pathways. If the two sequential enzymes cannot form a complex with each other, the metabolite must first be released from the producing enzyme to the reaction medium and then be transported to the consuming enzyme, via the reaction medium, by free diffusion. 3. Food-Related Gram-Positive Bacteria: Enterotoxin A Expression in Staphylococcus aureus and a New Regulation Mechanism in Lactococcus lactis
Sammanfattning : Staphylococcal enterotoxin A (SEA) is the most common enterotoxin found in outbreaks of staphylococcal food poisoning (SFP). Based on the amount of SEA produced, S. aureus strains were divided into two main groups, high- and low-SEA-producing strains. LÄS MER
4. Recognition and Separation of Hemoglobin Variants via Molecularly Imprinted Polymers
Sammanfattning : Hemoglobin (Hb) is the predominant protein in red blood cells with allosteric regulation mechanisms for delivering oxygen between the lungs and tissues. After the 1980s, concentrated research on modified Hb emerged because of the necessity for the development of a blood substitute (oxygen carrier). LÄS MER
5. Mechanism of Metabolite transfer between Enzymes in Glycolysis and Connected Pathways
Sammanfattning : The metabolite produced by one enzyme in a metabolic pathway can be transferred to the next enzyme in the pathway by free diffusion via solution or by channelling in an enzyme-enzyme complex without prior release of the metabolite to solution. While metabolite channelling is known to occur in systems where stable multienzyme complexes form, conflicting views have been expressed as to its existence in pathways involving "soluble" enzymes.
