21. Factors potentially influencing pathogenetic mechanisms and hyperglycemia in pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes : clinical studies in humans
Sammanfattning : The pathogenetic mechanisms underlying type 2 diabetes (T2D) and prediabetes involve an interaction between β-cell dysfunction and insulin resistance (IR). The resulting hyperglycemia, as well as other clustered cardiovascular (CV) risk factors in T2D, constitutes a severe hazard for development of complications to the disease. LÄS MER
22. EVALUATION OF BIOLOGICAL STRATEGIES TO ENHANCE HYDROLYSIS DURING ANAEROBIC DIGESTION OF COMPLEX WASTE
Sammanfattning : Anaerobic digestion (AD) offers considerable potential in the production of energy from renewable sources, and is being increasingly recognised as a sustainable technology for the treatment of waste. The production of energy from waste such as municipal solid waste (MSW), lipid-rich waste, and agricultural biomass and waste may play an important role in the production of renewable energy given the huge amounts of these types of waste generated annually. 23. Folding and retention of rotavirus glycoproteins in the endoplasmic reticulum
Sammanfattning : The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is a membrane bound organelle composed of a network of cisternae stretching throughout the cytoplasm. Functionally, the ER performs many essential processes, such as glycosylation, and biosynthesis of lipids; it provides a redox potential condition for forming S-S linkages, and a quality control system, and functions as an intracellular calcium store. 24. On osmolality and sperm function during processing for assisted reproduction
Sammanfattning : Deep basic knowledge about sperm physiology is relevant and important to optimize the outcome of procedures used during Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) to select spermatozoa for fertilization. More specifically, this study examined osmolality changes and consequences for sperm motility and sperm selection in the laboratory. LÄS MER
25. SOUnd-DRIven BIOtechnology
Sammanfattning : Ultrasound has been vastly applied in different areas such as medical imaging and the food industry, but not much attempt has been made to investigate its influence on microorganisms and its potential to be applied in microbial biotechnology. Previous studies show the potential of acoustic waves to increase biomass yield, production of secondary metabolites and enhanced enzyme-catalyzed reactions, probably due to improved mass transfer and cell retention.
