  1. 6. Heparan Sulfate in the Amyloidosis and Inflammation of Alzheimer’s Disease

    Författare :Paul O'Callaghan; Xiao Zhang; Lars Lannfelt; Jeremy Turnbull; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Alzheimer’s disease; amyloidosis; amyloid-β; apolipoprotein E; astrocytes; glia; heparanase; heparan sulfate; heparan sulfate proteoglycans; microglia; neuroinflammation; Geriatrics; Geriatrik; Cellforskning; Cell Research; Neuroscience; Neurovetenskap; Pathology; Patologi;

    Sammanfattning : Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder, with extensive evidence implicating the misfolding, aggregation and deposition of the amyloid-β (Aβ) peptide as central to the pathogenesis. Heparan sulfate (HS) is an interactive glycosaminoglycan, attached to core proteins as HS proteoglycans (HSPGs). LÄS MER

  2. 7. Pathways linking sleep, neuroimmune signaling and pain: an integrative approach

    Författare :Martin Flores Bjurström; Anestesiologi och intensivvård; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; pain; neuroinflammation; inflammation; glia; central sensitization; cerebrospinal fluid; osteoarthritis; chronic postsurgical pain; groin hernia repair; sleep; sleep disturbance; perioperative; neurophysiology;

    Sammanfattning : Background and objectives: Neuroinflammation is implicated in the development and maintenance of persistent pain states, but there is limited data linking cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) inflammatory mediators with neurophysiological pain processes in humans. Study I aimed to investigate whether there are coherent changes in CSF inflammation associated with central sensitization (CS), and to evaluate potential differences in CSF levels of inflammatory mediators between osteoarthritis (OA) patients with disabling pain and pain-free controls. 3. 8. Astrocyte-mediated short-term synaptic depression

    Författare :My Andersson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :glutamate; glia; plasticity; synapse; hippocampus;

    Sammanfattning : Short-term synaptic plasticity, the activity-dependent regulation of synaptic efficacy that occurs in the timeframe of milliseconds to seconds, is a fundamental property of the synapse, mostly attributed to changes in release probability. These changes are commonly ascribed to intrinsic mechanisms in the presynaptic terminal and to different transmitters acting on the presynaptic terminal. LÄS MER

  4. 9. In vivo properties of neural stem cells after transplantation into the rat brain-Studies of phenotypic differentiation and functional integration using cell-specific labelling and electrophysiological techniques

    Författare :Ulrica Englund Johansson; Peter Eriksson; Lund Oftalmologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; cell line; Neurology; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi; functional integration; electrophysiology; retrograde tracing; immortalized; GFP; migration; axonal projections; glia; neuron; transplantation; stem cell. progenitor cell; CNS; Biomedical Sciences;

    Sammanfattning : In the present thesis, we have examined the in vivo properties of in vitro expanded human and rat neural stem-and progenitor cells after transplantation into the neonatal and adult rat brain. The survival and differentiation of the grafted cells were assessed using species-specific antisera, and pre-labelling with the reporter gene green fluorescent protein (GFP). LÄS MER

  5. 10. Translational research of the quaking gene : Focusing on the conjunction between development and disease

    Författare :Bryn Farnsworth; Lina Emilsson; Roman Chrast; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; QKI; glia; oligodendrocyte; Alzheimer s; schizophrenia; zebrafish; statistics; morpholino; Biologi med inriktning mot evolutionär organismbiologi; Biology with specialization in Evolutionary Organismal Biology;

    Sammanfattning : Quaking (QKI) is an RNA binding protein involved in the post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression. Originally identified as the cause of hypomyelination in a mouse mutant, it has since been consistently implicated in a wide range of neurological diseases. LÄS MER
