  1. 1. Population genomic analyses of regulatory variation and selection in Brassicaceae species

    Författare :Robert Horvath; Tanja Slotte; Peter Hambäck; Douglas G. Scofield; Matthew Webster; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Capsella grandiflora; Arabidopsis thaliana; Arabidopsis lyrata; natural selection; gene expression variation; DNA and gene body methylation; transposable elements; DNA accessibility; gene expression noise; epigenetic silencing; linked selection; ekologi och evolution; Ecology and Evolution;

    Sammanfattning : The impact of selection on regulatory variation and the contribution of regulatory changes to phenotypic variation has long been debated in evolutionary genetics. Because cis-regulatory elements such as promoters and enhancers can be difficult to identify, it has been more challenging to quantify the impact of selection on variation in cis-regulatory regions than in protein-coding regions. 2. 2. Birds as a Model for Comparative Genomic Studies

    Författare :Axel Künstner; Hans Ellegren; Hanna Johannesson; Chris Ponting; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Birds; Selection; Gene expression; Sequence evolution; Next-generation sequencing; Comparative genomics; Molecular evolution; Genomics; Substitution Rates; Non-coding DNA; Biologi med inriktning mot molekylär evolution; Biology with specialization in Molecular Evolution;

    Sammanfattning : Comparative genomics provides a tool to investigate large biological datasets, i.e. genomic datasets. In my thesis I focused on inferring patterns of selection in coding and non-coding regions of avian genomes. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Speciation genomics : A perspective from vertebrate systems

    Författare :Nagarjun Vijay; Jochen. B.W Wolf; C. Alex Buerkle; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :evolution; speciation; genomics; vertebrate; adaptation; selection; linked selection; crow; killer whale; hybrid zone; transcriptomics; population genetics; behaviour; colouration; Biology with specialization in Evolutionary Genetics; Biologi med inriktning mot evolutionär genetik;

    Sammanfattning : Species are vital entities in biology. Species are generally considered to be discrete entities, consisting of a group of (usually interbreeding) individuals that are similar in phenotype and genetic composition, yet differ in significant ways from other species. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Quo vadis? Insights into the determinants of evolutionary dynamics

    Författare :Alexandre Rêgo; Rike Stelkens; Dmitri Petrov; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; natural selection; selection; genetic drift; evolutionary rescue; historical contingency; adaptation; complex environments; evolutionary predictability; parallel evolution; populationsgenetik; Population Genetics;

    Sammanfattning : Predicting future evolutionary outcomes and explaining past and current patterns of biodiversity are fundamental goals in evolutionary biology. Trajectories of evolving populations are determined by evolutionary mechanisms (natural selection, mutation, genetic drift, and gene flow) and the environment in which the populations are found. 5. 5. Novel Statistical Methods in Quantitative Genetics : Modeling Genetic Variance for Quantitative Trait Loci Mapping and Genomic Evaluation

    Författare :Xia Shen; Örjan Carlborg; Lars Rönnegård; William Hill; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; statistical genetics; quantitative trait loci; genome-wide association study; genomic selection; genetic variance; hierarchical generalized linear model; linear mixed model; random effect; heteroscedastic effects model; variance-controlling genes; Complex Systems – Microdata Analysis;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis develops and evaluates statistical methods for different types of genetic analyses, including quantitative trait loci (QTL) analysis, genome-wide association study (GWAS), and genomic evaluation. The main contribution of the thesis is to provide novel insights in modeling genetic variance, especially via random effects models. LÄS MER
