6. Dynamics of Microbial Genome Evolution
Sammanfattning : The success of microbial life on Earth can be attributed not only to environmental factors, but also to the surprising hardiness, adaptability and flexibility of the microbes themselves. They are able to quickly adapt to new niches or circumstances through gene evolution and also by sheer strength of numbers, where statistics favor otherwise rare events. LÄS MER
7. Computational exploration of human genome variation
Sammanfattning : In studies of human genome variation, researchers attempt to identify the DNA sequence differences between our genomes that contribute substantially to variation that can be observed on a physical level (phenotype). Genetic variation can also be used to study population dynamics in human history, and how evolutionary forces have shaped the human genome. LÄS MER
8. Cloning, Expression, Pharmacological Characterization and Anatomical Distribution of Melanocortin Receptors in an Evolutionary Perspective
Sammanfattning : The melanocortin (MC) receptors are G-protein coupled receptors thatparticipate in several important physiological functions such as the regulation of the energy balance. This thesis focuses on the evolutionary aspect of the MC receptors and their pharmacology. One MC4 receptor and two MC5 receptor subtypes were found in a teleost fish, zebrafish. LÄS MER
9. Cytochrome P450 Enzymes in Bile Acid Biosynthesis and Fatty Acid Metabolism : Studies on Members of the Porcine CYP4A and CYP8B Subfamilies
Sammanfattning : The present investigation is devoted to studies on porcine members of the cytochrome P450 4A (CYP4A) and CYP8B1 subfamilies, which are involved in bile acid biosynthesis and fatty acid metabolism. Hyocholic acid is considered to fulfil the requirements for trihydroxy bile acids in the domestic pig (Sus scrofa) in the absence of cholic acid. LÄS MER
10. Evolutionary and Pharmacological Studies of NPY and QRFP Receptors
Sammanfattning : The neuropeptide Y (NPY) system consists of 3-4 peptides and 4-7 receptors in vertebrates. It has powerful effects on appetite regulation and is involved in many other biological processes including blood pressure regulation, bone formation and anxiety. LÄS MER
