1. Genetic Determinants of Dyslipidemia
Sammanfattning : Dyslipidemia is a chronic deviation from normal blood lipid levels that can lead to atherosclerosis and other cardiovascular diseases; dyslipidemia and its sequelae are caused by the complex interplay of genetic and environmental factors. Although circulating concentrations of total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) have a strong genetic underpinning, not much is known about the genetic factors that affect long-term deteriorations in lipid concentrations. 2. Genetic analysis of murine malaria
Sammanfattning : Malaria, an infectious disease caused by Plasmodium parasites, is one of the major world-scale health problems. Despite the efforts aimed at finding an effective way to control the disease, the success has been thwarted by the emergence of parasite drug resistance and mosquito resistance to insecticides. 3. Advances in studying the role of genetic divergence and recombination in adaptation in non-model species
Sammanfattning : Understanding the role of genetic divergence and recombination in adaptation is crucial to understanding the evolutionary potential of species since they can directly affect the levels of genetic variation present within populations or species. Genetic variation in the functional parts of the genome such as exons or regulatory regions is the raw material for evolution, because natural selection can only operate on phenotypic variation already present in the population. 4. Novel Statistical Methods in Quantitative Genetics : Modeling Genetic Variance for Quantitative Trait Loci Mapping and Genomic Evaluation
Sammanfattning : This thesis develops and evaluates statistical methods for different types of genetic analyses, including quantitative trait loci (QTL) analysis, genome-wide association study (GWAS), and genomic evaluation. The main contribution of the thesis is to provide novel insights in modeling genetic variance, especially via random effects models. LÄS MER
5. Genetic studies of diabetes in northern Sweden
Sammanfattning : Diabetes mellitus represents a group of metabolic disorders caused by both environmental and genetic factors. The two most common forms of diabetes are type 2 diabetes (T2D) and type 1 diabetes (T1D). T2D is associated with obesity and the disease is caused by insulin resistance and pancreatic b-cell dysfunction. LÄS MER
