  1. 1. Genetic regulation of autoimmune neuroinflammation

    Författare :Kristina Becanovic; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :MS; EAE; QTL; gene regulation; linkage analysis;

    Sammanfattning : Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a complex disease characterized by inflammation and demyelination in the central nervous system (CNS), causing neurological deficits. Although there is an increased familial aggregation rate and evidence for a genetic influence on disease susceptibility, environmental factors are also of importance. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Variable viral genes as genetic immunogens

    Författare :Karl Ljungberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Influenza; hemagglutinin; HIV-1; gp160; DNA vaccine; genetic immunization; CpG; GM-CSF; pseudovirus.;

    Sammanfattning : Influenza and HIV-1 are two highly variable viruses that cause extensive morbidity and mortality in many countries. The most cost-effective medical intervention against influenza is vaccination but this has to be repeated annually because of the low antigenicity of the vaccine. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Modulation of HIV immune responses in natural infection and after genetic immunization

    Författare :Sandra Amelia Calarota; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Identification and treatment of HIV-1 infection are both urgent, in view of the continued spread of the infection. We developed easy and inexpensive serological methods for the diagnosis and follow-up of children born to HIV-1-infected mothers. A quantitative immunofluorescence method replaced the cumbersome Western blot. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Non-genetic processes in development and heredity

    Författare :Willian T. A. F. Silva; Simone Immler; Yoav Soen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology with specialization in Evolutionary Genetics; Biologi med inriktning mot evolutionär genetik;

    Sammanfattning : There is a swiftly increasing amount of empirical evidence that non-genetic factors, such as DNA methylation and small RNAs, play an important role not only in development but also in heredity and, therefore, evolutionary dynamics. One of the most interesting aspects of non-genetic processes is their responsiveness to environmental conditions, which has been shown to affect not only the phenotype and fitness of the individuals directly exposed to the stimulus, but also their offspring even when the stimulus is no longer present, indicating that the transmission of non-genetic factors across generations might work analogously to immunization against recurring conditions. 5. 5. Prime-boost immunization strategies against HIV-1

    Författare :Andreas Bråve; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Since the start of the global HIV epidemic in 1981, more than twentyfive million people have succumbed to AIDS-related diseases. The epidemic is most severe in Sub-Saharan Africa, where twentyfive million people are currently infected and more than two million died during 2006. LÄS MER
