11. Evolutionary optimisation of a morphological image processor for embedded systems
Sammanfattning : The work presented in this thesis concerns the design, development and implementation of two digital components to be used, primarily, in autonomously operating embedded systems, such as mobile robots. The first component is an image coprocessor, for high-speed morphological image processing, and the second is a hardware-based genetic algorithm coprocessor, which provides evolutionary computation functionality for embedded applications. 12. Development of New Methods for Inferring and Evaluating Phylogenetic Trees
Sammanfattning : Inferring phylogeny is a difficult computational problem. Heuristics are necessary to minimize the time spent evaluating non optimal trees. In paper I, we developed an approach for heuristic searching, using a genetic algorithm. Genetic algorithms mimic the natural selections ability to solve complex problems. LÄS MER
13. Genetic studies in mood disorders
Sammanfattning : Mood disorders, including bipolar disorder (BPD) and major depressive disorder (MDD), are highly complex psychiatric disorders. Decades of genetic studies have generated a large number of putative genetic susceptibility variants. However, with exception of CACNA1C, SYNE1 and ANK3 in BPD no robust association has as yet been identified. LÄS MER
14. Fluorescence studies of complex systems : organisation of biomolecules
Sammanfattning : The homo and hetero dimerisation of two spectroscopically different chromophores were studied, namely: 4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diazas-indacene (g-BODIPY) and its 5-styryl-derivative (r-BODIPY). Various spectroscopic properties of the r-BODIPY in different common solvents were determined. LÄS MER
15. Tactical decision-making for autonomous driving: A reinforcement learning approach
Sammanfattning : The tactical decision-making task of an autonomous vehicle is challenging, due to the diversity of the environments the vehicle operates in, the uncertainty in the sensor information, and the complex interaction with other road users. This thesis introduces and compares three general approaches, based on reinforcement learning, to creating a tactical decision-making agent. LÄS MER
