11. Studies of risk loci in multiple sclerosis
Sammanfattning : Multiple sclerosis (MS), a chronic inflammatory disease of the central nervous system, is one of the most common causes of neurological disability among young adults. While the etiology is unknown, an increasing number of environmental and genetic risk factors is being identified. LÄS MER
12. Impact of candidate genes on obesity and type 2 diabetes
Sammanfattning : Obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D) have strong genetic components. Identification of susceptibility genes in both diseases will give better knowledge of their pathomechanisms and future therapies. LÄS MER
13. Genetic analysis of candidate susceptibility genes for type 1 diabetes
Sammanfattning : Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a complex disease where the pancreatic β-cells are destroyed in an autoimmune attack. For the patients, this leads to lifelong daily insulin treatment and increased risk for various kinds of complications. It is thought that both environmental as well as genetic factors act in concert to cause T1D. LÄS MER
14. Unraveling genetic mechanisms in autism spectrum disorders
Sammanfattning : Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) are a group of neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by impairments in socialization and communication accompanied by repetitive and stereotypic behaviors. ASDs are highly heritable and heterogeneous with a complex genetic etiology. LÄS MER
15. Identification of genes and regulators that are shared across T cell associated diseases
Sammanfattning : Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) of hundreds of diseases and millions of patients have led to the identification of genes that are associated with more than one disease. The aims of this PhD thesis were to a) identify a group of genes important in multiple diseases (shared disease genes), b) identify shared up-stream disease regulators, and c) determine how the same genes can be involved in the pathogenesis of different diseases.
