1. Complex disease genetics : Utilising targeted sequencing and homogeneous ancestry
Sammanfattning : The complex disease investigations presented in this thesis aimed to provide new information regarding underlying genetics by using targeted sequencing and ethnically homogeneous cohorts. This work moved past current methodologies and addressed data stratification issues, that might have been hindering new findings. LÄS MER
2. Aneuploidy compensatory mechanisms and genome-wide regulation of gene expression in Drosophila melanogaster
Sammanfattning : Stimulation or repression of gene expression by genome-wide regulatory mechanisms is an important epigenetic regulatory function which can act to efficiently regulate larger regions or specific groups of genes, for example by compensating for loss or gain of chromosome copy numbers. In Drosophila melanogaster there are two known chromosome-wide regulatory systems; the MSL complex, which mediates dosage compensation of the single male X-chromosome and POF, which stimulates expression from the heterochromatic 4th chromosome. 3. Chromosome-wide gene regulatory mechanisms in Drosophila melanogaster
Sammanfattning : In Drosophila there are two different chromosome-wide targeting systems, the dosage compensation system that equalizes the transcriptional output from X-linked genes between males and females, and the regulation of the 4th chromosome mediated by the POF protein. The best studied of these two mechanisms is the dosage compensation system. LÄS MER
4. Population Genetics of Human Genomic Elements
Sammanfattning : The genomes of living organisms are composed of a multitude of functional units, which interact with each other and their environment in a highly regulated fashion, to facilitate the expression of an enduring (and evolving) phenotype. Several approaches have emerged in the effort to identify these functional units and explore their activities. LÄS MER
5. On the Evolution of the Avian Transcriptome
Sammanfattning : Change in gene expression is a powerful tool for evolution, because seemingly small expression changes can contribute important steps towards adaptation without necessarily affecting the whole organism. There is still much to learn about how gene expression evolves on genome- and population-wide levels, especially in non-model organisms. LÄS MER
