16. Spin-offs from Stretching a Point : Strings, Branes and Higher Spin
Sammanfattning : String theory has proved to be a valuable theoretical laboratory for probing gravity and gauge theory in a unified framework. In this thesis some of the exciting spin-offs of string theory such as branes and higher spin are studied. After a review of the basics of string theory the four papers of the thesis are discussed. 17. Field Theories and Vortices with Nontrivial Geometry
Sammanfattning : This thesis investigates aspects of field theories and soliton solutions with nontrivial topology. In particular we explore the following effective models: a limited sector of the scalar Electroweak theory called extended Abelian Higgs model, and a classical mechanics model derived from the low energy SU(2) Yang-Mills theory. 18. Yang-Mills Theory in Gauge-Invariant Variables and Geometric Formulation of Quantum Field Theories
Sammanfattning : In Part I we are dealing with effective description of Yang-Mills theories based on gauge-invarint variables. For pure Yang-Mills we study the spin-charge separation varibles. The dynamics in these variables resembles the Skyrme-Faddeev model. LÄS MER
19. Some Aspects of Non-Perturbative Quantum Field Theory
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis is to describe some different ways in which non-perturbative methods enter in quantum field theory. In the thesis such methods enter in 1+1-dimensional theories: various Yang-Mills theories and electrodynamics. It also enters when treating charged bosons or fermions interacting with an external, classical field. LÄS MER
20. Quasiparticles in the Quantum Hall Effect
Sammanfattning : The fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE), discovered in 1982 in a two-dimensional electron system, has generated a wealth of successful theory and new concepts in condensed matter physics, but is still not fully understood. The possibility of having nonabelian quasiparticle statistics has recently attracted attention on purely theoretical grounds but also because of its potential applications in topologically protected quantum computing.
