1. PoGOLite : The Polarised Gamma-ray Observer
Sammanfattning : PoGOLite is a balloon-borne experiment which will study polarised soft gamma-ray emission from astrophysical targets in the 25 keV – 80 keV energy range by applying well-type phoswich detector technology. Polarised gamma-rays are expected from a wide variety of sources including rotation-powered pulsars, accreting black holes and neutron stars, and jet-dominated active galaxies. LÄS MER
2. Collective Structure of Neutron-Rich Rare-Earth Nuclei and Development of Instrumentation for Gamma-Ray Spectroscopy
Sammanfattning : Neutron-rich rare-earth nuclei are among the most collective nuclei that can be found in nature. In particular, the doubly mid-shell nucleus 170Dy is expected to be the nucleus where the collective structure is maximized. LÄS MER
3. Nuclear Structure Studies near 208Pb and γ-ray Imaging Techniques
Sammanfattning : This thesis focuses on a high-resolution γ-ray spectroscopy experiment where the fragmenta- tion of a 208 Pb primary beam was used to populate even-mass nuclei around 208 Pb. It was conducted in 2012 using the Advanced GAmma-ray Tracking Array (AGATA) while it was placed at GSI Darmstadt, Germany. LÄS MER
4. Position-sensitive germanium detectors for gamma-ray tracking, imaging and polarimetry
Sammanfattning : Modern germanium detectors are often manufactured with two-dimensionally segmented electrical contacts. Signals induced in each segment are read out simultaneously when a photon is detected. Detailed pulse shape analysis (PSA) of these signals allows to resolve positions of individual γ-ray interactions with a precision of at least a few mm. LÄS MER
5. Characterisation of the Neutron Wall and of Neutron Interactions in Germanium-Detector Systems
Sammanfattning : A Monte Carlo simulation of the Neutron Wall detector system has been performed using Geant4, in order to define optimum conditions for the detection and identification of multiple neutrons. Emphasis was put on studying the scattering of neutrons between different detectors, which is the main source of the apparent increase of the number of detected neutrons. LÄS MER
