Sammanfattning : Contemporary diseases like diabetes, asthma, atherosclerosis etc. are marked by chronic inflammation, often supported by the activity of different macrophages. Proteins from galectin family were found to contribute to disease pathophysiology. Therefore, there is an intensive interest in understanding different galectin functions. LÄS MER
Sammanfattning : Today, dementia such as, Alzheimer’s disease (AD), vascular diseases and motor neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson’s disease (PD), represent a major public health problem. For instance, PD affect to more than 10 million people worldwide and almost 50 million people are affected by dementia. LÄS MER
4. Neutrophil function in health and disease - role of intracellular radicals and galectin-3 as regulators of inflammation
Sammanfattning : The focus for this PhD project has been to investigate neutrophil functions in different (inflammatory) settings with specific focus on phagocyte-derived intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) as well as neutrophil interaction with the inflammatory mediator galectin-3. Neutrophils, the most abundant leukocyte in human blood, have traditionally been viewed upon mainly as professional phagocytes, being able to degrade invading microbes, and thus essential in the defence against infection. 5. Inflammation in experimental neonatal brain injury and in a clinical study of preterm birth; involvement of galectin-3 and free radical formation
Sammanfattning : Introduction; Intrauterine infection/inflammation is associated with preterm delivery (PTD) and severe neonatal morbidity. Inflammation is also important in the secondary neurotoxic cascade leading to perinatal brain injury. LÄS MER
