1. Application of imaging TOF-SIMS in cell and tissue research
Sammanfattning : This thesis is aimed at extending the use of TOF-SIMS (time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry) as an analytical tool in cell and tissue research. TOF-SIMS is a relatively new method that allows analysis of the chemical composition of sample surfaces. LÄS MER
2. Studies on interactions of norovirus capsid protein with fucosylated glycans and galactosylceramide as soluble and membrane bound ligands
Sammanfattning : Noroviruses (NVs) are among the most common viral pathogens which target the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and cause severe diarrhea, vomiting and episodes of abdominal cramps with fever. Millions of people around the world get infected with NVs annually, of which 200,000 cases are estimated to be fatal. LÄS MER
3. Phospholipid membranes in biosensor applications : Stability, activity and kinetics of reconstituted proteins and glycolipids in supported membranes
Sammanfattning : In this study the formation of supported membranes onto planar solid supports has been investigated. The stability and activity of reconstituted membrane receptors has been studied. The potential use of such preparations in biosensor applications is discussed. The lipid films were made by the Langmuir Blodgett and by the liposome fusion techniques. LÄS MER
4. Factors regulating lymphocyte development and peripheral activation
Sammanfattning : Peripheral tolerance is regulated by different types of regulatory T cells, including CD1-restricted T cells and CD4+CD25+ regulatory T (Treg) cells. This thesis has focused on the interactions between T cells and antigen presenting cells (APCs) and the immunregulatory function of TGF-b as two important factors regulating differentiation and activation of T cells in the periphery. 5. Mucosal adjuvants and their mode of action in the female genital tract
Sammanfattning : Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) cause a socioeconomic burden, morbidity and even mortality in a large part of the human population all over the world today. One of the most common genital ulcerative diseases is caused by herpes simplex virus type 2 with over 536 million people infected world-wide. LÄS MER
