1. Improving fingerprint biometrics by local symmetry and fusion
Sammanfattning : Fingerprint recognition and biometrics in general have been significantly gaining attention within the last years, not least due to the biometric passport that has been introduced all over Europe and the American immigration management system US-VISIT. The tasks of fingerprint recognition can be broken down to smaller entities, i.e. LÄS MER
2. DNA-Controlled Lipid-Membrane Fusion
Sammanfattning : Membrane fusion is essential for nerve-cell communication, for protein transport between cell organelles and the cell-membrane and for enabling the merger between virus and host membranes during virus infection. We have demonstrated that short DNA oligonucleotides, membrane-attached via CH in an orientation that mimics the overall zipperlike architecture of fusion-inducing proteins, induce fusion of both suspended vesicles and vesicles site-specifically tethered to SLBs. 3. Extreme Electron Beams and Brilliant X-rays : Generation, Manipulation and Characterization of Relativistic Electron Beams for and from Plasma-Based Accelerators
Sammanfattning : This thesis is based on work done by the author on the development of plasma-based electron accelerators driven by ultra-intense laser pulses and dense electron bunches. Plasma based accelerators have several benefits, such as accelerating fields around 1000 times stronger than in “conventional” radio-frequency accelerators, which can allow for shrinking the overall footprint of the accelerator. 4. Instrumentation for energetic Neutral atom measurements at Mars, Venus and The Earth
Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with the development and calibrations of sensors to measure energetic neutral atoms (ENAs) at Mars, Venus, and the Earth. ENAs are formed in charge exchange processes between energetic, singly--charged ions and a cold neutral gas. LÄS MER
5. Engineered ion-bombardment as a tool in thin film deposition
Sammanfattning : Energetic-ion bombardment has become an attractive route to modify the crystal growth and deposit high quality thin films. In high-power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS) where the discharge is characterized by a significant amount of ions of the sputter-ejected atoms, energetic-ion bombardment effects could not be underestimated.
