1. Chemical signalling in the Drosophila brain : GABA, short neuropeptide F and their receptors
Sammanfattning : Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and short neuropeptide F (sNPF) are widespread signalling molecules in the brain of insects. In order to understand more about the signalling and to some extent start to unravel the functional roles of these two substances, this study has examined the locations of the transmitters and their receptors in the brain of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster using immunocytochemistry in combination with Gal4/UAS technique. 2. Brain Aromatase in the guppy, Poecilia reticulata : Distribution, control and role in behaviour
Sammanfattning : Oestrogens are produced by aromatisation of androgens by the aromatase enzyme. In the vertebrate brain this synthesis has vital functions in nerve protection, cell proliferation and nerve development during injury respectively brain development. LÄS MER
3. Circadian plasticity in the neuromuscular junction of Drosophila melanogaster
Sammanfattning : A biological clock exists in many organisms and controls rhythmic behaviors such as the activity pattern of locomotion. At the cellular level, it has been shown that circadian rhythms in the morphology of neurons exist in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. LÄS MER
4. Causes and consequences of spatial genetic variation in two species of scleractinian coral in East Africa : Levels of genetic differentiation and intraspecific diversity of Pocillopora damicornis and Platygyra daedalea
Sammanfattning : The work presented in this thesis is a study of the spatial genetic structure of two species of scleractinian corals, Pocillopora damicornis and Platygyra daedalea. The overall objective was to investigate the current capacity of MPAs to preserve and restore coral reefs and to contribute information to improve management decisions. LÄS MER
5. The sensory morphology of insect pollinators : From structure to behaviour and ecology
Sammanfattning : Insect pollinators play an important role in balancing our ecosystems and maintaining plant and food diversity. Due to anthropogenic activities such as global warming, habitat loss and degradation, pesticides, and pathogens, many pollinator populations have been undergoing drastic declines in recent decades.
