  1. 1. Genetic Variation and Relatedness of Freshwater Pearl Mussel Margaritifera margaritifera L. populations

    Författare :Amra Hadzihalilovic-Numanovic; Larry Greenberg; Nils Ryman; Karlstads universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Margaritifera margaritifera; genetic variation; age structure; genetic distance; Biology; Biologi; Biology; Biologi;

    Sammanfattning : The two papers presented in this thesis focus on population genetic study on freshwater pearl mussel populations in Sweden, using RAPD method. In paper I, I examine genetic variation within and between 5 populations in a single drainage area in south western Sweden. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Habitat compensation in nature-like fishways : Effects on benthos and fish

    Författare :Stina Gustafsson; Olle Calles; Martin Österling; Jostein Skurdal; Paul Giller; Karlstads universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biocanal; biodiversity; brown trout; freshwater pearl mussel; functional feeding groups; habitat heterogeneity; large woody debris; macroinvertebrates; PIT-tag; salmonids; Biology; Biologi;

    Sammanfattning : The construction of nature-like fishways has become an increasingly common measure to restore longitudinal connectivity in streams and rivers affected by hydroelectric development. These fishways also have the potential to function as habitat compensation measures when running waters have been degraded or lost. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Ecology of freshwater mussels in disturbed environments

    Författare :Martin Österling; Larry Greenberg; Björn Arvidsson; David Strayer; Karlstads universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Unionoida; Margaritifera margaritifera; Dreissena; Salmo trutta; habitat degradation; turbidity; sedimentation; recruitment; conservation.; Biology; Biologi; Biology; Biologi;

    Sammanfattning : The number of species extinctions is increasing at an alarming rate. Long-lived freshwater mussels of the order Unionoida, which include a parasitic stage on a host fish, are highly threatened. Habitat degradation by turbidity and sedimentation is thought to be one major reason for their decline. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Parasite host interaction between the freshwater pearl mussel (Margaritifera margaritifera) and brown trout (Salmo trutta) – the impact from glochidia larvae on the host

    Författare :Niklas Wengström; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : Parasites can modulate the physiology and behavior of the hosts to enhance their chances to complete their life cycle. The numerous freshwater bivalves of the order Unionoida all have a parasitic larval stage, also known as glochidia, parasitizing fish hosts. LÄS MER

  5. 5. On the abundance and distribution of organisms in fragmented riverscapes : Insights From Studies On Different Species And Spatiotemporal Scales

    Författare :Carl Tamario; Anders Forsman; Petter Tibblin; Erik Petersson; Johan Höjesjö; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Evolutionary Biology; Evolutionsbiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Dams in rivers modify the habitats and hinder dispersal and migration. Since moving around is an essential part of most organisms’ life histories, this represents a new regime for life in freshwater. LÄS MER
