  1. 1. Microbial Metagenomics : A Tale of the Dead and the Living

    Författare :Katarzyna Zaremba-Niedźwiedzka; Siv G.E. Andersson; Jeroen Raes; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; single-cell genomics; single cell; fossil metagenome; freshwater metagenome; LD12;

    Sammanfattning : It is a microbial world we live in: microbes outnumber other organisms by several orders of magnitude, and they have great importance for the environment. However, environmental microbes are notoriously difficult to grow in the laboratory, and using culture independent techniques is necessary to expand our view. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Non-cyanobacterial nitrogen fixation insights in humic freshwater lakes and ponds

    Författare :Leyden Fernandez-Vidal; Stefan Bertilsson; Sari Peura; David Walsh; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :humic lakes; thaw ponds; non-cyanobacterial diazotrophs; nitrogen fixation; nitrogenase;

    Sammanfattning : The biological basis of nitrogen fixation beyond the canonical role of Cyanobacteria is not well understood in freshwater ecosystems. To address this gap in knowledge, the main objective of this thesis is to study non-cyanobacterial nitrogen fixation in freshwater lakes and ponds. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Bacterial Degradation and Use of Chitin in Aquatic Habitats

    Författare :Sara Beier; Stefan Bertilsson; Ian Head; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Chitin; organic matter degradation; microbial ecology; functional guild; Biology; Biologi;

    Sammanfattning : Chitin belongs to the most abundant biopolymers on earth where it has an important role as a structural element in crustaceans, insects, fungi and some phytoplankton. Missing evidence for long-term accumulation of chitin in nature implies fast turnover and as chitin is composed of aminosugar subunits it holds central roles in both carbon and nitrogen cycles.
