1. Forest decline in South Central Ethiopia : Extent, history and process
Sammanfattning : This study presents the extent, history and process of forest decline in Awassa watershed, south central Ethiopia. By combining different data sources such as satellite images, social surveys and historical documents, forest decline is described quantitatively and qualitatively and the main causes behind this process are identified. 2. Remote Sensing of Forest Decline in the Czech Republic
Sammanfattning : This thesis describes the localisation and quantification of deforestation and forest damage in Norway spruce forests in northern Czech Republic using Landsat data. Severe defoliation increases the spectral reflectance in all wavelength bands, especially in the mid infrared region. LÄS MER
3. Human factors in mechanized cut-to-length forest operations
Sammanfattning : Although forest operations research has a more than 50-year-long tradition in the field of human factors, there is a current decline in resources put on continuous and systematic human factors research. Therefore, the overall aim of this thesis was to contribute new knowledge on working conditions in mechanized cut-to-length logging operations and their relationship to system performance. LÄS MER
4. Genomics of population decline
Sammanfattning : With human populations forecasted to grow in the next decades, many mammals face increasing anthropogenic threats. The consequential population declines are a precursor to extinctions, as small populations are not only more sensitive to stochastic events, but reduction in population size is generally also followed by a decrease in genetic diversity, which in turn reduces adaptive potential and fitness of the population. 5. Ectomycorrhizal Fungal Mycelial Dynamics and its Role in Forest Soil Carbon Cycling
Sammanfattning : Most boreal tree species rely on root-associated ectomycorrhizal fungi for nutrient acquisition, in exchange the trees allocate part of their photosynthetically fixed carbon (C) to these fungi. This has a feedback on soil C dynamics as mycorrhizal fungi are important in regulating soil C cycling and storage. LÄS MER
