11. Regeneration in continuous cover forestry systems
Sammanfattning : The overall aim of the studies underlying this thesis has been to qualify and quantify the regeneration of tree species in a range of typical growing environments of possible Continuous Cover Forestry (CCF) silvicultural systems in boreal forests of northern Sweden. Data presented in Papers I and II show that the light environment did not differ significantly between points at different distances to trees, but it was clearly affected by the stand stem density (SSD). 12. Strain Gradient Plasticity Modelling of Precipitation Strengthening
Sammanfattning : The introduction of particles and precipitates into a matrix material results in strengthening effects. The two main mechanisms involved in this matter are referred to as Orowan and shearing. To numerically study this phenomenon is the motivation to the research done, which is presented here in this thesis. LÄS MER
13. Opposition and adjustment to industrial ‘greening’ : the Swedish forest industry’s (re)actions regarding energy transition – 1989-2009
Sammanfattning : This thesis analyses how the Swedish forest industry has (re)acted regarding the energy transition and, in particular, regarding the reconstruction of the electricity and forest resources in Sweden during the 1989–2009 period. The thesis consists of four papers that analyse how the Swedish forest industry by means of energy management practices at individual pulp and/or paper mills, in corporate strategies performed by CEOs and boards of directors, and via its industry association, has dealt with mounting political and public demands for the industry to become ‘greener’. 14. Incentives and Forest Reform: Evidence from China
Sammanfattning : Chapter I: Forest Devolution Reform in China: A Trigger for Investment or Deforestation? I investigate whether and how the devolution of forestland to households in China triggered investment in forestland, and its effect on forest resource conditions. The investment analysis is based on a panel dataset of a two-round survey of 3,000 households in eight provinces before and after the implementation of the forest devolution reform, while the analysis of resource conditions is based on satellite imagery on forest cover and vegetation during 2001-2012. 15. Forest-savanna transitions: Understanding adaptation and resilience of the tropical forest ecosystems using remote sensing
Sammanfattning : Climate and deforestation-induced changes in precipitation drive tropical forest-savanna transitions. However, precipitation alone provides a superficial understanding of the underlying mechanism behind these transitions. This is because our knowledge of how vegetation responds to changes in hydroclimate is fragmented. LÄS MER
