1. Optimal strategies and information in foraging theory
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, I present both theoretical and empirical work where we have studied how humans and animals use information in situations where they need to continually update their information on the density of a resource. We have found that the amount of information, and the way the information is presented, are important factors for how well decisions are adapted to current circumstances. LÄS MER
2. On starlings and farming: population decline, foraging strategies, cost of reproduction and breeding success
Sammanfattning : The European Starling Sturnus vulgaris as many other farmland bird species has been declining during the last decades. The cause of these declines is generally believed to be changes with in agricultural methods affecting breeding and survival of birds. LÄS MER
3. Life History Strategies in Linnaea borealis
Sammanfattning : About 70% of the plant species in the temperate zone are characterised by clonal growth, clonal species are also in majority in the Arctic and Subarctic where they affect the structure and composition of the vegetation. It is therefore of great importance to increase our knowledge about clonal plants and their growth and life histories. LÄS MER
4. Domestication effects on foraging behaviour : consequences for adaptability in chickens
Sammanfattning : The main aim of this thesis was to study domestication effects on foraging behaviour in chickens and to investigate whether and how domestication and selection for high production have influenced adaptability in chickens. Two domestic strains of chickens (egg layers and meat type chickens) and their wild ancestor, the red jungle fowl (RJF) were compared in different test situations with respect to foraging behaviour and adaptability. 5. Comparative studies of cognitive abilities in the Paridae : Evidence from laboratory studies
Sammanfattning : The Paridae (tits, titmice and chickadees) is a bird family consisting of both food hoarding and non-hoarding species. Many studies have been conducted on birds that are considered to be cognitively advanced, such as parrots and corvids, whereas much less is known about these small passerines. LÄS MER
