6. Numerical optimization of hull/propeller/rudder configurations
Sammanfattning : The new framework of the global economy has stimulated and expanded the shipbuilding and shipping industry, especially in Asia in the twenty-first century. This induces urgent and high requirements on designing and building both conventional and new types of ships with high performance, such as high speed, manoeuvrability, seaworthiness and so on. 7. The growth of waves by wind as a problem in nonequilibrium statistical mechanics
Sammanfattning : In 1948, Casimir predicted a net attractive force between two perfectly conducting parallel plates due to electromagnetic vacuum fluctuations. By analogy, the interaction of two ships on a wavy sea has been named Maritime Casimir effect. This is an example of force generation in non-equilibrium systems. LÄS MER
8. Resonant magnetic perturbation effect on the tearing mode dynamics : Novel measurements and modeling of magnetic fluctuation induced momentum transport in the reversed-field pinch
Sammanfattning : The tearing mode (TM) is a resistive instability that can arise in magnetically confined plasmas. The TM can be driven unstable by the gradient of the plasma current. When the mode grows it destroys the magnetic field symmetry and reconnects the magnetic field in the form of a so-called magnetic island. LÄS MER
9. Modeling of Initial Mold Filling in Uphill Teeming Process Considering a Trumpet
Sammanfattning : The flow pattern in the uphill teeming process has been found to be closely related to the quality of ingots and further to affect the yield of ingot production, which is crucial for the steel making process. The formation of non-metallic inclusion and entrapment of mold flux has been considered to be affected by the flow pattern in the gating system and molds by many previous researchers. LÄS MER
10. Influence of structural timber variability on reliability and damage tolerance of timber beams
Sammanfattning : The thesis addresses two main problems: 1) Probablistic modelling of lengthwise variability in structural timber, 2) Reliability and damage tolerance analysis of beams made of structural timber. Timber is considered as an elastic-brittle material. Dependence of timber properties on time and environment conditions is neglected. LÄS MER
