  1. 1. Plant-Animal Interactions and Evolution of Floral Display and Flowering Phenology in Arabidopsis lyrata

    Författare :Saskia Sandring; Jon Ågren; Johan Ehrlén; José Gómez; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Ecology; Arabidopsis lyrata; natural selection; floral display; phenology; flowering time; plant-animal interactions; pollination; herbivory; selection gradients; population differentiation; local adaptation; Ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis, I combined comparative and experimental approaches to examine selection on reproductive traits, and population differentiation in the insect-pollinated, outcrossing, perennial herb Arabidopsis lyrata. More specifically, I (1) determined whether selection on flowering phenology and floral display can be attributed to interactions with pollinators and herbivores, (2) examined whether population differentiation in flowering phenology and floral display is correlated with current selection on these traits, and (3) tested for local adaptation from contrasting environments in Europe. 2. 2. Evolutionary Ecology of Floral Traits in Fragrant Orchids

    Författare :Elodie Chapurlat; Nina Sletvold; Jon Ågren; Magne Friberg; Kathleen Kay; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; agents of selection; diurnal and nocturnal pollination; divergent selection; field experiment; floral evolution; floral scent; Gymnadenia conopsea; Gymnadenia densiflora; Orchidaceae; phenotypic selection; pollinator-mediated selection; spatial variation; scent rhythm;

    Sammanfattning : Why are flowers so diverse? Much of floral evolution is thought to be driven by pollinator-mediated selection. However, the connection between macroevolutionary patterns of floral diversity and microevolutionary processes remains poorly understood. In this thesis, I have used the fragrant orchids Gymnadenia conopsea s.s. LÄS MER

  3. 3. The evolutionary ecology of plant reproductive diversity and floral signals : Mating system and floral scent in Arabis alpina

    Författare :Hampus Petrén; Biodiversitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Arabis alpina; floral scent; intraspecific variation; mating system; parental conflict; phenotypic plasticity; phenotypic selection; reproductive isolation; speciation; volatile organic compound VOC ;

    Sammanfattning : Flowering plants display an extraordinary floral- and reproductive diversity. Variation in the size, shape, colour and scent of flowers, and in systems and strategies of mating, is ubiquitous in comparisons of different species, but also exists among different conspecific populations. 4. 4. Genetic Variation and Evolution of Floral Display in Primula farinosa

    Författare :Camille Madec; Jon Ågren; Johan Ehrlén; Richard Ennos; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; natural selection; flowering time; population differentiation; local adaptation; male reproductive success;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis, I combine molecular analyses, common-garden and field experiments to examine how evolutionary and ecological processes influence patterns of genetic variation among and within populations of the declining, insect-pollinated, self-incompatible, perennial herb Primula farinosa. More specifically I examined 1) whether genetic diversity at neutral marker loci was related to habitat fragmentation and habitat stability, 2) whether floral display and flowering time were more strongly differentiated among populations than were putatively neutral marker loci, 3) whether adaptive population differentiation could be detected on a local spatial scale, and 4) whether floral display differentially affected male and female reproductive success. 5. 5. Pollinators, Enemies, Drought, and the Evolution of Reproductive Traits in Primula farinosa

    Författare :Per Toräng; Jon Ågren; Johan Ehrlén; Rebecca Irwin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; Alternative reproductive strategies; climate change; facilitation; floral display; flowering phenology; frequency-dependent selection; genetic diversity; life-history strategies; local adaptation; pollination; predation; Primula farinosa; reproductive effort; soil disturbance; stochastic growth rate; Ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis, I combined comparative and experimental approaches to examine selection on reproductive traits and population differentiation in the insect-pollinated, self-incompatible, perennial herb Primula farinosa. More specifically, I (1) determined whether the effects of floral display and interactions with pollinators and seed predators, and plant reproductive success were frequency-dependent and affected by surrounding vegetation context, (2) examined the consequences of intermittent drought years on population dynamics using numerical simulations based on demographic data collected over seven years, (3) analyzed among-population differentiation in flowering phenology and reproductive allocation, and its relationship to soil-depth at the site of origin.
